Recognizing Our Fantastic Team

Plus Exciting Spring Updates!

Check out our newest promotion on the next page! Spring is the season of transformation. We are truly blessed when nature comes to life with the beauty of blooming flowers, budding trees, and sunshine. As we head into spring, we wanted to take a moment to share some exciting updates with you. From transforming your smile to community events, we’ve got a lot going on here at Hagerstown Smiles! We want to take a moment to recognize our amazing dental assistants who celebrated Dental Assistant Appreciation Week in March. Our dental assistants are the backbone of our practice, and we are so grateful for all they do to ensure our patients receive the best care possible. In April, we will also recognize and celebrate Dental Hygienist Appreciation Week. Our hygienists are essential in promoting and maintaining good oral health for patients and are often

the first line of defense in identifying potential health issues, such as gum disease, oral cancer, and other systemic conditions. The week of April 3–9 provided an opportunity to show our gratitude and appreciation for their hard work and dedication. We also want to give a special shoutout to our office administrators on Office Administration Appreciation Day on April 26. They work tirelessly to ensure our office runs smoothly and our patients are always cared for. We are genuinely proud of our teams! The care you receive is due to the extra effort of our team members and everyone working together toward a common goal, putting your needs first! We have some more exciting news to share with our Delta Dental patients! We have arranged for Delta Dental to reimburse our office directly. This means you no longer must pay for services in full and then wait for

your patience during our transformation; we look forward to continuing to serve you and your family and friends. We want to invite our veteran patients to join us for a special occasion on Nov. 10, 2023. Hagerstown Smiles will be offering FREE dental care to all veterans who are existing patients in our practice. We are honored to serve those who have served our country, and we look forward to our second annual event. Finally, if spring is inspiring you to transform your smile, give us a call! We are here to chat about anything, including veneers, adult orthodontic options, whitening, and dental implants, to determine what might be best for you! Check out our newest promotion on the next page! Thank you for being part of our dental family, and we look forward to seeing you soon! – The Ladies and Gentlemen of Hagerstown Smiles

A SPOONFUL OF FLUORIDE KEEPS THE CAVITIES AWAY!

HOW FLUORIDE HELPS FIGHT OFF TOOTH DECAY

Tooth decay can occur for several reasons, and the No. 1 defense to keep your teeth strong and resilient is fluoride, a naturally occurring mineral in many foods and water supplies. But have you ever wondered how it works? Typically, we have two methods. Topical Fluoride By receiving fluoride treatments at the dentist's office or using fluoride toothpaste, mouthwash, or gels at home, you are using topical fluoride. Topical fluoride is only effective on teeth that have already erupted through your gums. When applied to your tooth enamel, it is absorbed and, in turn, strengthens resistance to decay. Most dentists and dental hygienists recommend

that children, especially those with newly erupting teeth, receive professional applications of fluoride twice annually during their check-up appointments.

is absorbed, white spots on the teeth, known as fluorosis, may occur.

Both topical and systemic fluoride can effectively treat fissures and pits on the surface of your teeth, exposed tooth roots, and dental decay. It can help to control the effects of frequent sugar intake and poor dental care. Is it time for your professional fluoride treatment at your next appointment? Or do you need fluoride toothpaste or mouthwash recommendations? We are here to answer all your questions to help you take the best care of your teeth! Set up your appointment today!

Systemic Fluoride Did you know many foods and our

local community water supplies contain fluoride? When we consume this fluoride through some of the things we eat and drink, we help to strengthen the teeth we see and those still below our gums, waiting to erupt. This type of fluoride can also be purchased and administered as drops. Especially for children, only the recommended amount of fluoride must be ingested. In cases where too much fluoride

HOW IMPROVED BALANCE EMPOWERS YOUR ACTIONS

Balance is essential in everything you do, every day, all the time. Most of the time, you maintain your balance without even realizing it. However, you may notice a decline in your ability to balance as you age or after suffering an injury. You can combat this decline by performing balance exercises, such as yoga, standing on one leg, or walking heel-to-toe. You’ll notice numerous benefits in all aspects of your life when you practice proper balance. One of the best benefits of having a solid balance is reducing the likelihood of falling and getting injured. When you have good balance, you’re less likely to trip and fall, which usually leads to severe injuries. Nothing is worse than slipping and breaking a bone or injuring your head, which is why keeping up with balance exercises is vital, regardless of age.

easily, making everyday tasks like walking, running, and climbing stairs easier. This can also lead to improved overall fitness and physical health. Good balance can even help if you’ve been suffering from poor posture or back pain, as it improves posture and alignment. Not all of the benefits of proper balance are physical, though. You can also experience significant mental benefits. Good balance helps reduce stress and anxiety and improves your focus and concentration. This can cause you to do better in work or school while enhancing your overall quality of life. You may also feel more confident or boost your self-esteem since balance can help with general fitness and physical health. It’s never too late to start improving your balance. Try doing yoga or performing balance exercises, and you’ll quickly notice various improvements to your mental and physical well-being.

Another fantastic benefit of improved balance is increased mobility and flexibility. With good balance, you can move more freely and

Go Green With of Using Eco-Friendly Dental Products page 4

You Can Help Improve the Environment! Consider Using Eco-Friendly Dental Products

When you go to the supermarket or drug store, you’ll come across many environmentally friendly products. But did you know you can use eco-friendly dental products? Not only are they good for oral health, but they’re also great for the environment! Here are three reasons to choose eco- friendly products for your oral health. You can reduce plastic waste. All the products you use for your oral health routine — toothbrush, toothpaste, mouthwash, and floss — come in plastic bottles and containers. Although it’s recyclable, the plastic in your dental products cannot be recycled — they are sent straight to a landfill or dumped in our waterways. So, look for brands advertising sustainability on the packaging. Eco-friendly products are biodegradable. Typical dental products are made with polyethylene and nylon, which aren’t biodegradable. Because of this, they can take many years to decompose. Luckily, eco-friendly dental products exist, like biodegradable, compostable, and plastic-free toothbrushes made of bamboo. You’ll experience a more natural clean. A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) study has shown how the plastics in non-eco-friendly dental products can

negatively impact the reproductive system of lab animals they were applied to. Studies are

still being conducted to see if those chemicals affect humans similarly. In the meantime, choosing environmentally friendly dental products made from mineral clay, sea salt, and plant extracts can help you avoid potentially harmful plastics found in many dental products. Furthermore, many types of mouthwash are made with fake dyes, artificial sweeteners, preservatives, and other chemicals. Eco- friendly mouthwashes avoid synthetic chemicals and only contain all-natural and non-toxic ingredients.

If you’re interested in purchasing eco-friendly dental products, you can find them at your local supermarket or buy them online. For more information about environmentally friendly brands and items, go online and search for “zero waste” dental products.
