The rink will feature professional-grade boards, which were once installed at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto. The boards, which had been in storage since they were used at a May, 2004 playoff game between Toronto and Philadelphia, were purchased for $23,000. The goal is to have the new rink totally fi- nanced by the time the rink is flooded for the first time, said Champlain Township Mayor Gary Barton last Friday when Glen- garry-Prescott-Russell MP Pierre Lemieux announced the grant. Champlain Councillor Troy Carkner “and his band of merry men” are spearheading the drive to set up the rink, which will re- place a board-less skating surface that has been maintained beside the arena over the

VANKLEEK HILL | With big assists from the community and the federal government, a group is rapidly turning a patch of grass in Vankleek Hill into a year-round recre- ational facility, sporting some big-league recycled hockey fixtures. A $70,500 federal government grant has been approved for a new $180,000 outdoor rink beside the community centre. When it opens this winter, the rink will be used for public skating and pick-up hockey. The slab will be used for basketball and ball hockey during the warmer months.

leaders of the campaign that culminated in the opening of the current arena in the late 1970s. The new rink will help promote active lifestyles, said Barton, who is also chair of the Eastern Ontario Board of Health. The new surface will encourage the general public to be more physically active and en- able more young people to play hockey. The outdoor facility is actually a throw- back to an era when pick-up impromptu games were the norm. “It is amazing to see 30 kids of all ages getting together on a rink and they all get along. When things get organized, that is when trouble starts,” remarked Barton.
