where conditions have necessitated their discontinuance. What the organ of the China Inland Mission says is equally true of our Hunan work: “By way of correcting an erroneous impression which seems to be in the minds of some friends at home, let it be explained that the Western governments, in requesting withdrawals of their nationals from the interior of China, accept no financial responsibility in the matter. The only assistance rendered missionaries has been in the nature of an occasional passage by’• naval craft in some emergency. Last advices received indicate that as the result of a conference between Dr. Frank Keller and the command ers of the Chinese forces-stationed in our Institute build- ings, the soldiers have evacuated. The exterior of the buildings remains in fair condition, but the interior has been stripped of door knobs and all ornamentation, and much of the school furniture has disappeared. It is not known when work will be permitted looking toward the refitting of the buildings, but present conditions do not warrant any moves in that direction. Dr. Keller says: “As we look at the sad fate of the buildings of the Union Theological School lying just adjacent to us on the north, our buildings have escaped with little injury and our hearts are filled with humble gratitude to God.” Dr. Keller is carrying for

with the losses of p r o p e r t y and personal effects, as being a m o n g the inevitable liabil ities i n v o l v e d in the task of g i v i n g the G o s p e l to the people of China.”
