' Points and Problems 1. “Thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son . . . And thou shalt have joy and gladness” (Lk. 1:13, 14). It is not always that the birth of a son brings joy and gladness ultimately. Too often it brings sorrow and weeping. And we are not to suppose that when a son turns out badly the entire responsibility can be laid upon him. Parents must bear in part at least the responsibility for the outcome of their children, whether it be good or bad. Knowing what we do about these matters, the greatness of John may be traced back in some degree at least to the home from which he came. This is not to detract from the agency of the grace of God, for we do not forget that it is only by His grace that good men are what they are. It was the grace of God which placed John in the home from which he came. And it was also the grace of God which made his parents what they were—“righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless” (Lk. 1:6). 2. “Shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost” (Lk. 1:15). The connec tion between the above two facts is more than a mere literary coincidence. It doubtless would be a mistake to af firm that a man who touches wine cannot be a Christian, but it is not wrong to say that such a man cannot know the fullness and power of the Holy Spirit in his life. There is another Scrip ture in which we find the drinking of wine opposed to the filling of the Spirit: "And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit” (Eph. 5:18). The body of the Christian is the temple and instrument of the Holy Spirit, and it is a deadly sin to paralyze wantonly its sensibilities and thus hinder His ministry. 3. “He shall be great in the sight of the Lord” (Lk. 1:15). There were many aspects of greatness in the Baptist. His preaching caused a tremendous stir in Israel. People came by the thousands to his baptism, including even the proud Pharisees and Sadducees. But these re sults, after all, were small matters. John rose to his greatest height when his disciples pointed out the fact that the crowds were leaving him to follow Another, and he answered steadily and humbly, “He muSt increase, but I must decrease” (John 3:26-30). -
