AFRAID OF RX? Physical Therapy Is The Natural Pain Relief You’re Looking For!

However, with severe pain comes severe medication, as well. Opioids are the most commonly used medication for pain management across the United States. Even though they are commonplace, they contain some shockingly harmful facts: • Opioids are a highly addictive substance and are the most commonly abused prescription medication. • Opioids are a highly dangerous class of substances. Heroin is among the opioid category, as well as prescription pain relievers like oxycodone, hydrocodone, morphine, and more. • More than 2 million people in the United States become addicted to pain medication every year, many of the medications being opioids. • About a quarter of heroin addicts began their addiction through prescription opioid dependency. These facts, while disturbing, cannot be ignored. They paint a bleak picture regarding prescription pain medication use across the United States, to the point where experts believe it has become an epidemic. You don’t need to have a history of addiction to become dependent on opioids - in fact, many people who become addicted have never had any issues with drug dependency in the past. Fortunately, physical therapy can help provide the same pain relief in a much safer, healthier, and natural way.

If you have recently been in a car accident, you know how frightening it can be. Automobile accidents can result in injuries ranging from mild cuts and abrasions to broken bones and severe whiplash. This, undoubtedly, results in pain and discomfort following the accident. In many cases, your primary physician may prescribe opioids as a way to ease your pain during your recovery process. However, this can pose some dangerous risks. Opioids are highly addictive and contain undesirable side effects. In fact, just within the year of 2016, opioid overdoses claimed the lives of 116 people each day. It is also estimated that about 11.5 million Americans misuse the pain-management drugs they’re prescribed when recovering from an injury – such as those sustained during car accidents. Fortunately, physical therapy is a much safer and more effective pain- management solution. Physical therapy can help in your recovery from an automobile accident by reducing pain and inflammation, in addition to restoring your range of motion. To learn more about how we can help you recover from the injuries you sustained in your car accident, contact Advanced Balance Studio today. THE MANY DANGERS OF OPIOIDS It is important to note that opioids and over-the-counter drugs are very different. When people turn to over-the-counter medications to help ease pain, there aren’t many significant health risks. For the most part, Advil, Tylenol, and Ibuprofen are safe to use in moderation if you are trying to find immediate relief when recovering from your car accident. But with severe pain, from a more serious injury, you may have sustained during the accident, prescription-strength medications may be issued.

CILANTRO LIME CHICKEN & AVOCADO SALSA

INGREDIENTS • 1.5 lb. boneless chicken breast • 1/4 cup lime juice • 2 tbsp olive oil • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro • 1/2 tsp ground cumin • 1/4 tsp salt • For Avocado Salsa:

• 4 avocados, diced • 1/2 cup fresh cilantro • 3 tbsp lime juice • 1/2 tbsp red wine vinegar • 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes • 1 garlic clove, minced

Keeping your chest upright, back straight, and knees slightly bent, take a large step with one foot away from the opposite foot. Follow through by stepping in the same direction with the second foot, back into the original stance. Repeat this same maneuver in the opposite direction. DIRECTIONS Add 1/4 cup of lime juice, olive oil, 1/4 cup of fresh cilantro, ground cumin, and 1/4 tsp of salt to a small bowl. Whisk until mixed. Add chicken and marinade to a large ziplock bag. Let chicken marinate for at least 15 minutes. Preheat grill to medium- high heat (about 400°F). Place chicken on grill and grill each side for 4-6 min, until chicken is no longer pink. Remove and let sit. For avocado salsa: add avocado, 1/2 cup fresh cilantro, 3 tbsp lime juice, red wine vinegar, red pepper flakes, garlic clove, and salt to a small bowl. Gently toss to mix. Top the cilantro lime chicken with the avocado salsa and serve.

PATIENT SUCCESS STORY Physical Therapy Helped This Pat ient Avoid Surger y

Physical Therapy helped one of our patients, Shirley delay elective surgery. Previously, 85 year-old Shirley enjoyed golfing, gym and home exercising. Shirley experienced a gradual progression of shoulder pain, limiting her ability to sleep and restricting the use of her arm for daily activities, such as brushing her hair, reaching for items in the kitchen. It also limited her tolerance for golfing. She also began experiencing occasional pain around the neck area and into the arm. A sharp pain would increase suddenly when reaching outward, followed by a lasting aching pain. Because of this, Shirley was scheduled for an elective surgery to address radiographic and MRI findings, but had to postpone surgery. She then decided to seek out a physical therapist to treat her pain. After a Physical Therapist’s examination and evaluation, Advanced Balance Studio designed a treatment plan to recover range-of-motion, modify sleep position, strengthen weak muscles, and eventually even return to golf and normal activities. Following three weeks (6 visits total) of implementing this treatment plan, Shirley does not have constant pain, is sleeping better and is looking forward to the day she will return to golf. If her recovery continues to improve, Shirley believes she may be able to avoid surgery altogether! When it comes to her physical therapy treatments, Shirley enjoys the stretching, soft tissue work and exercise progression, as it reminds her of her previous fitness activities. She is happy she chose physical therapy versus surgery and opioids!

We look forward to seeing her on the golf course, once again, with her friends!
