OHL draft calls CIHA duo

Two of this year’s senior students at the Canadian International Hockey Academy are on the priority draft list for the Ontario Hockey League. Gabe Vilardi was drafted second overall for the Windsor Spitfires while his fellow classmate Corson Green is the 10 th overall pick for the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. Vilardi, a Kingston native, who came to Rockland to further his hockey skills and academic studies at the CIHA, has made a name for himself as one of the top players in the Ontario Eastern Minor Hockey League (OEMHL). Experts pegged himas a top-five pick for the OHL draft this year as the six- foot-two centreman notched 18 goals and 21 assists in as many games for the CIHA Voyageurs during the past Minor Midget season. “Gabe has been a pillar for our team on the offence this season,” statedGuy Girouard, CIHA hockey director and Voyageurs head coach, “and it is very exciting to see his hard work recognized. Being selected by an OHL

of the Plymouth Whalers, the 15-year-old CIHA student was also picked for the Team Ontario roster at this year’s Canada Winter Games and shared the gold medal with his teammates in Prince George in February. Vilardi has proven an adept at protecing the puck fromopposing checkers and using his size tomake roomand scoring opportunities for his fellowVoyageurs. He is already listed as one of the best potential prospects for the 2017 NHL draft. Green was selected in the fifth round of the OHL draft by officials for the Greyhounds. His CIHA coach thinks the six-foot-two na- tive fromPotsdam, New York has the talent needed to succeed at the next level of his hockey career.. “Corson is a skilled defenceman with a natural talent,” said Girouard. “He is a powerful defender with quick feet and has the ability to play a physical game.” This year’s OHL draft saw 300 players from 90 different teams and clubs across Ontario and the eastern United States run
