E-vote debacle back on council table

later this month. But Mayor Guy Desjardins indicated during a phone interview that he is still fuming about the whole Scytl and e-vote matter. “I wasn’t happy with the situation,” Des- jardins said. “That clearly did not go right. The staff can take credit for doing a lot to fix the screwup.” The system the company set up expe- rienced several glitches both involving confi- dential delivery of voter registration I.D. numbers prior to the October voting period and there were problems on Election Day itself with the online voting system, forcing city staff to rush to develop ameans for resi- dents to cast their ballots. Mayor Desjardins promised the in-camera report, with its legal advice, should be ready for the next council session but he is also looking ahead to the next time when Clarence-Rockland residents have to vote in an election.

“I want to look at the system they used in Ottawa,” Desjardins said, adding that the City of Ottawa used a combined voting sys- tem, giving residents there a choice between

traditional paper ballots or an online voting forum. He noted that Ottawa had the results of its civic vote very soon after the polls closed on Election Day.

The new council for the City of Clarence- Rockland will be having a look at and a decision tomake regarding an old decision of the previous council that created some controversy prior to and during last year’s civic election in the city. During the in-camera session of its April 7 committee of the whole meeting, council members reviewed and discussed the Scytl contract situation. Scytl was the company that the previous council contracted with to provide an electronic-voting system for Clarence-Rockland for the 2014 municipal election. Final results and recommendations from the in-camera session will not be disclosed until the regular public session of council

Police take down pit bull

A pit bull attack has left a woman and her child injured and in hospital for treatment. Police investigation continues on the circumstances surrounding a pit bull at- tack inside a home on Laviolette Street in Rockland. The OPP answered a call April 10 about a child seen screaming for help in the neighhbourhood. A police incident report states that the child had gone to a neighbour, seeking help, saying that his mother was fighting off a pit bull inside their house. The child also showed some injuries.

Arriving at the house, police entered and found a woman on the floor with a dog strad- dling her. The officers tried to get the dog away from the woman but it refused to stop attacking her. In the end, police were forced to put the dog down to save the woman from further harm. Both the woman and the child were taken to hospital for treatment of several serious injuries. The regional health unit was also contacted about the incident to work with police on further investigation of the inci- dent.

You are invited to the final Open Houses to review and provide feedback on the recommendations for these two environmental assessment (EA) studies. The Confederation Line East LRT Extension study is following the Transit Projects Assessment Process and the OR174 and Prescott-Russell County Road 17 (CR17) corridor is under the Municipal Class EA process for a Schedule ‘C’project.
