real thanks to partnerships with the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) and the City of Clarence-Rockland, along with the support of the local community, various groups and individuals. “Even though I envisioned the CIHA,” Bourdeau said, “I built it with help.” The CIHA has provided formal academic studies and NHL-class training in hockey to students from all across North America, Europe, and Asia. When not sitting in class or doing drills on the ice, the academy’s stu- dent body has also been involved in various community support projects along with representing the CIHA in the Major Minor hockey league. Valedictorian Anna-Rose Bertin thanked the academy’s teaching and coaching staff on behalf of the Class of 2014. “The teachers made this year memora- ble for our graduating class,” she said. “The coaches at CIH have always been there for us.” fies School;Hockey; Life: Axel Olson Student Success Bursary for Future Post- Secondary Studies: Romain Wild Character Always Award: Matthew Clem- ent Alumni Award for Perseverance: Connor Smith Ontario Principal’s Plaque: Anna-Rose Bertin Founders Scholarship Award for Academ- ic Excellence: Anna-Rose Bertin

ROCKLAND | Rockland’s place in the inter- national spotlight as a place for students to go to for NHL-class training in hockey is assured now. The Canadian International Hockey Acad- emy (CIHA) delivered its third year of gradu- ates on June 6 as administration, staff, fami- lies, and special guests applauded the 11 members of the Class of 2014. “Be proud of what you’ve accomplished,” said Robert Bourdeau, CIHA founder, during his address to the grads. Four years ago the Prescott-Russell busi- nessman made good on a decade-long dream he’d had to create a world-class hockey training facility in his own area. But, Bourdeau reminded grads, no one ever suc- ceeds just on their own. His dream became

ROCKLAND | The regular high school track-and-field season is over now for Rockland’s Tanner Van Every. Now he will focus his attention on the summer sea- son with the Ottawa Lions Track and Field Club team. “I’m going to have summer competi- tion with the Ottawa Lions starting in two weeks,” Van Every said during a Monday in- terview. The Rockland District High School (RDHS) student was in Mississauga last week as the sole representative for Prescott-Russell at the Ontario Federation of Secondary School Athletics (OFSSA) championships. The RDHS junior leaped into action in the triple jump and finished 17 out of a field of 24 in his event. “I came in hoping more for myself,” said Van Every, adding he was a bit disappointed with his performance. “It felt like I wasn’t all warmed up. Then my knees started hurting and it went downhill from that.” The track-and-field setup for the OFSSA in Mississauga features an almost-all concrete design for the events. Van Every is used to having either artificial turf or natural ground or grass to work with for warm-ups along with a hard rubber running aisle leading GREGG CHAMBERLAIN GREGG.CHAMBERLAIN@EAP.ON.CA

up to the sand pit for triple and long jump. He noted that he was not the sole athlete at OFSSA suffering from the concrete setup. “By the end, I saw a lot of people with ice on their knees,” he said. “We were all feeling it.” Van Every’s best leap was 12.02 metres on his second attempt. He is still happy to have a chance to compete at OFSSA this season. “It was a fun experience.” He plans to ask his coaches with the Ot- tawa Lions club for advice on how to train for a concrete field setup.
