T he importance of professionalism in construction was celebrated at an event in the Parliament buildings at Stormont in November when more than 30 leaders from the sector marked their graduation with the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB). At the graduation event on Saturday, November 12, three new Fellow Chartered members and 28 new Chartered members were conferred. The graduates were mainly from Northern Ireland but some travelled to the event from the Republic of Ireland, Scotland and England. and fellow professionals. Patsy McGlone MLA, the event sponsor, congratulated graduates and to reminded everyone that the construction industry is a key driver for the physical and cultural regeneration of Belfast. He praised the work of CIOB members in helping to reshape the city. Caroline Gumble, Chief Executive of the CIOB, praised the graduates on their achievement and encouraged the new members to champion the implementation of professionalism throughout their workplaces and further afield. Mike Foy OBE FCIOB, Past-President of the CIOB, highlighted the important work that the CIOB is doing to improve quality within the construction industry, while

Noel McKee FCIOB, Trustee of the CIOB, highlighted the work the CIOB is doing to promote Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) throughout the sector. As well as celebrating the 31 individuals, the event also saw Brenda Rogan MCIOB accept a certificate to confirm CIOB Chartered Building Company status for CHC Group Ltd. Roger Gillespie FCIOB, Chair of CIOB’s Northern Ireland committee, said, “It was fantastic to see so many people receiving much deserved recognition. Chartership is recognised as a milestone qualification in someone’s career and often helps springboard people on to more senior positions. We wish all the graduates well for the future.”

A round 80 representatives from Northern Ireland’s built environment sector gathered on November 10 for an inspirational event on Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, organised by the CIOB in partnership with the Equality Commission of Northern Ireland (ECNI) and CITB NI. Members of the panel shared their own experiences and offered attendees advice and examples of good practice on how to begin their own EDI journeys. Event champions EDI in NI’s built environment
