While some causes are more severe than others, a physician can identify each. As the body ages, joints become inflamed. Cartilage may wear down, reducing the “buffer” between bones. In some cases, limited blood flow may cause bone tissue death, or necrosis. If you’reexperiencingredness, inflammationand immobilized joints,thecondition may be severe. Recognizing Physical Therapy Month and Global PT Day of Service

Atlanta Human Performance Center and Atlanta Technical College Physical Therapy Assistant Students Join Millions of Physical Therapists in Regnition of National Physical Therapy Month and Global PT Day of Service In addition to Breast Cancer Awareness month, did you know that October is National Physical Therapy Month (NPTM)? And this year, October 12th was designated as Global PT Day of Service? In honor of these two initiatives, on Saturday, October 12, 2019, Dr. Keith E. Evans, MD, PT, DPT, DN Cert. CEO and Director of Atlanta Human Performance Center (AHPC) and his staff along with the assistance of Atlanta Technical College (ATC) physical therapy assistant students and program coordinator, Dr. Tamey Howard-Feltner provided free physical therapy and fitness screenings to the local community. NPTM raises awareness that pain can be managed by physical therapy versus opioids. And to inform the public that physical therapy can be used to improve mobility, prevent future injuries, aid in injury recovery, and help with chronic diseases. Global PT Day of Service is designated as an opportunity for physical therapists, physical therapy assistants, physical therapy staff and students across the globe to collectively give back to communities. AHPC and ATC volunteer efforts during Global PT Day of Service allowed both organizations an opportunity to join millions locally and internationally. The screenings which included blood pressure, body composition, height, weight, BMI, strength, endurance, range of motion, flexibility and balance were conducted by both AHPC staff and ATC physical therapy assistant students. The results of the screenings were interpreted by both Dr. Evans and Dr. Feltner. They also provided each participant with an exercise prescription. Additional activities included aerobics and line dancing. Mrs. Phyllis Cain from the South Fulton branch of the University of Georgia Extension Service provided health and nutrition literature and delicious Guilt- Free cookies from Bite Me Inc. were served.

Participants in Saturday’s activities were very appreciative. As one gentleman stated, “It is a good indicator and it is a good evaluation and it was a good opportunity for me to understand where I should be and where I need to be this time next year and beyond. Overall, the program of evaluation and outcomes is a benefit to me individually and a benefit to all those who participated, so I am grateful to have this opportunity.” It is Dr. Evans’ goal to continue to conduct these screenings annually and to provide additional workshops on the use of physical therapy and fitness over opioids.
