LIVESTOCK FARMING What are the dangers related to antibiotic resistance?

Antibiotics play a critical role in keeping both hu- mans and animals healthy. In agriculture, they’re used to treat and prevent various diseases that threa- ten livestock populations. However, the misuse of these often-unregulated medications represents a source of contention for world health, food safety and global development. WHAT IS ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE? Antibiotic resistance occurs when bacteria become immune to the drugs commonly used to kill them. For example, when you take antibiotics to cure a bout

of pneumonia, a few bacteria might survive the treat- ment. Over time, the surviving bacteria could po- tentially develop into a new kind of pneumonia that typical antibiotics can’t cure. Scenarios like this pose a real threat to humans and animals alike. PREVENTIVE MEASURES To combat the spread of antibiotic resistance, there are a number of precautionary measures that farmers can take. • Only administer medication to livestock according to a veterinarian’s recommendations.

• Avoid using antibiotics solely to prevent disease. • Regularly vaccinate livestock to reduce the need for antibiotics. • Practice and promote healthy practices at every stage of production and transformation of animal and plant products. • Adopt a sustainable system that favours biosecu- rity. • Prioritize farming conditions that respect the well- being of animals.

Dairy: an industry in constant growth

tion of milk and milk products. WHITE GOLD

Did you know that global dairy production has increased by more than 50 per cent over the last 30 years? According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Na- tions (FAO), approximately 150 million hou-

seholds around the world play an active role in the dairy industry. This impressive growth is due in part to the fact that numerous de- veloping countries (primarily in South Asia) are becoming more involved in the produc-

of the environment and of animals’ well- being. Innovations in sustainable farming methods, have, for example, created superior quality products and successfully grown the industry’s market share. All in all, thanks to its constant development, the dairy industry certainly has a bright future ahead!

It’s common knowledge that milk is an excel- lent source of calcium, magnesium and vita- mins, making it a much-appreciated staple on breakfast tables across the globe. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that more than six billion people consume milk and other dairy products (cheese, yogurt, butter, cream, etc.) on a regular basis. Furthermore, in addition to creating millions of jobs across the world and contributing to both local and global economies, the dairy industry is in constant evolution. Technolo- gical advances in agriculture have allowed producers everywhere to develop new tech- niques that are more efficient and respectful
