HOW THE MILITARY CREATED A LOVE FOR THE LAW The Paradigm Alignment That Facilitates My Passion

I made the decision to leave the military because I had my son and his future to think about. I wanted to be present in his life. But more than that, I wanted to model selflessness for him while also fulfilling my passion for serving others. In the military, there are no questions about right and wrong. I got to serve others and do great things in the world. That’s what I fell in love with, and it’s the exact reason I became an attorney. We’re personal injury attorneys. We put our money on the line for what is right. I never have to go home and wonder if I’m doing the right thing. It may cost a lot of money to get there, but every day I get to serve someone in the same selfless capacity that I did in the military. I get to work with people who encompass the same moral paradigms I do. I may have my cases questioned, but never my motives. Becoming an attorney was the perfect calling for my life because it exemplifies the same ideals that the military did. One of the ways I attempt to serve others is by functioning as a translator. I accompany many clients to depositions and settlement conferences to make sure every client is represented to the fullest, regardless of language barrier. Spanish is so nuanced, and this makes translations complicated. I was at a hearing once, and the witness kept referencing “cintura.” The translator was from Puerto Rico and interpreted what the witness was saying as “his belt hurt.” But what he

meant was “my waist.” This may seem small, but in the law, details are everything.

I once had to stop a three-week trial because of a poor translation. The court was being misled, and the jury wasn’t getting the proper information. I had to object, and the jury had to be pulled out of the room to put the translator on the stand. I was the only one who caught it. We deal with serious accidents, so when it comes to a mistranslation, the repercussions can be severe.

“Becoming an attorney was the perfect calling for my life because it exemplifies the same ideals that the military did.”

A key part of my life was being in the Army and serving my country for 11 years. It defined me, and I look back fondly on my time there. The part I loved the most was the ability to commit to a calling that was bigger than myself, with people who demonstrated similar values. When I got out, I found I really missed that. I didn’t fully understand why, though, because it had been grueling. When I took the time to reflect, I realized that it wasn’t the long days and complicated issues that I missed. Getting away from the grind was actually a very healthy thing for me and my family. What I missed was the service, selflessness, the dedication to others.

Serving others and standing up for what is right will always be at the core of my values. It’s not just me, either. It’s what our boutique firm is built on. Everyone I get the pleasure of working with shares these ideals. It’s what gives us such a high success rate and makes what we do so meaningful. Our success is not because of what we do, but because of who we are.

THE 3 BEST WAYS TO PLAY HOOKY WITH YOUR CHILD

When Gary Chapman’s book “The Five Love Languages” came out, many people focused on building better relationships with their spouses. But just as words of affirmation, acts of service, touch, gifts, and quality time can help your marriage, these concepts can also help your relationship with your children. One way to show our children how much we love them is to spend quality time with them. And what better way to do that than to break them out of school to play some hooky? Baseball Sharing your love of sports can be a fun way to bond with your child. While day games might not be as common as they used to be, most teams will have at least a few of them each month. These tickets are usually cheaper and often come with promotions to help draw in fans. While most everyone else will be at work or school, you and your child will have free rein of the ballpark. Just be sure to root for the home team! The Zoo The zoo is a great place to educate your child outside of school. They can play hooky and still learn something. Many exhibits will provide information about the animals, their habitats, and conservation efforts. At the very least, your child might encounter an animal they’ve never heard of before.

Our Classy, Professional, Passionate Teammate MEET TRYSTA

We wanted to take a minute to introduce you to our rock star teammember, Trysta. She has been with us for about a year, and her presence in our office every day makes a huge difference in accomplishing our goals as a firm. She is a passionate fighter and treats her role in the justice systemwith absolute class and dignity. This is extremely important to us, as it reflects our firm’s core values. Trysta’s practice focuses largely on personal injury cases and has had an incredible success rate. She also takes on other matters, such as contract and real estate disputes. One of her flagship personal injury cases was a wrongful death matter where she and her co-counsel fought tooth and nail over the death of a young woman. Trysta represented the family of the young woman who was killed by her ex-boyfriend. The family had previously claimed that the ex- boyfriend exhibited violent, escalating behavior, jealousy, and possessiveness that led him to threaten, harass, and assault the young woman on two occasions. After Phoenix police confirmed that the ex-boyfriend made a valid death threat and that he had the intent and means to carry through with that threat, they failed to arrest him. The jury awarded $3 million in damages and apportioned fault between the various responsible parties, including the city of Phoenix. The woman’s family was relieved to know that their case might make a difference in how future similar complaints are handled.

Trysta brings an exceptional and rare skill set to our team. Not only can she fight in trial, but she’s also great at mediation and the not-so- glamorous parts of law, like paperwork. It’s an all-around approach that makes her successful in both our firm and in her personal life. We’re extremely fortunate to have someone like her on our team. If you have questions on how Trysta can fight for you, contact us today. You can see her passion for the law firsthand and put our 99 percent success rate to the test.

Why You Should Consider a Media Detox

Do You Need a Media Detox? The Dangers of Overstimulation

With the current trend of getting TV, social media, and news alerts sent to our phones, we have access to more media than we could ever consume. While constant connectivity is a boon for many aspects of our lives, researchers are discovering that too much stimulation is cause for concern. One study in the Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology found that too much social comparison, spurred by the likes of Facebook and cable news, can lead to an increased risk of depression. If you find yourself pressured to live up to the public lives of friends and family, or if you feel like you’re being bombarded with too much news and entertainment, consider a media detox. A detox doesn’t require you to unsubscribe from social media services or unplug your TV forever. Instead, think of it as a vacation from the overstimulation

so many of us experience. Ask yourself which aspects of your media diet are causing more stress than they’re worth, and take a break from them for a little while. “In the same way we think about what we eat, we should think about what we read, what we’re seeing, what we’re engaging in, and what we’re interacting with every day,” Emma Watson told CNN in an interview about her selective social media use. If you’re not mindful of your media consumption and participation, it tends to pile up. When you detox, it’s a lot easier to identify which parts of your media diet are essential and which are only a burden.

Because most of us consume media in small chunks throughout the day, it’s easy to overlook howmuch that time adds up. All those hours you spend on Facebook could be used to start a garden, knit a quilt, or join a soccer league. Unless you have an unlimited supply of leisure time (and who does?), you need to be selective in the way you spend it. Remember, media isn’t the cause of all your ills. Used mindfully, it can actually increase happiness and satisfaction. The problem is that we are so mired in the media muck that we can’t get a perspective on how much is too much. A detox will allow you to reassess the media you’re consuming and build a better plan for the future. You can still keep up with your grandkids on Facebook, but it shouldn’t be the only way you interact with the world.

Another benefit of a media detox is that you’ll have more time to pursue new and dormant hobbies.
