said, “Now by this I know that thou art a man of God, and that the word of the Lord in thy mouth is truth.” Elijah found courage and help in the assurance of God’s help even though he had to flee for his life. He learned that one of the ways in which God cares for His children is through the ministry of others to them. Per haps God would use you to help one of His children or one of His groups of worshipers. Pray that each day you will be listening to the voice of the Holy Spirit constantly to direct you to the words and the actions that will help others to know Him and that will help to supply the needs of His children.
come empty nor her cruse of oil fail until He should send rain upon the earth. When the widow obeyed, she, Elijah, and all of her house had food to eat, miraculously provided by God, for many days! One day the widow’s son became ill and died. When the widow blamed Elijah for the son’s death, Elijah took him to an upper room and placed him upon his own bed. Elijah prayed to God and stretched himself three times upon the boy’s body, saying, “ O Lord my God, I pray thee, let this child’s soul come into him again.” God answered Elijah’s prayer and restored the boy to life once more! When Elijah brought the boy to his mother, she
himself than he did of walking hum bly before the Lord for we read that he “ did worse than all that were be fore him” (v. 25). Israel’s Worst King 1 Kings 16:30 “ Like father, like son” surely is illustrated in Omri and Ahab. With such an evil father, what could be ex pected of the son ? Ahab outdid all the rest of Israel’s kings in the enormity of his sins. The woman he married, Jezebel (v. 31), only added to his downfall. Ahab, you will remember, is the king with whom Elijah had to do in his mighty conflict upon Mt. Car-, mel. Under his influence, it seemed that practically all Israel had turned away from God. Israel’s Indifference Toward Sin Amos 6:1-6 The prophet here pictures Judah and Israel, especially Israel, living in the lap of ease and luxury, evidently oblivious to the fact that judgment is coming on apace and they are not ready for it. These things were writ ten down as a warning to all future generations. Ahab, the king, was the most wicked king that Israel had ever had. “ Ahab did more to provoke the Lord God of Israel to anger than all the kings of Israel that were before him.” Elijah, God’s prophet, told Ahab that there should not be dew nor rain except at his word for years. Elijah had to hide by the brook Cherith to save his life from the angry king. He drank of the water of the brook, and God sent ravens to feed him bread and meat each morning and each evening. When the brook dried up because of the lack of rain, God commanded Elijah to go more than one hundred miles to a town where a widow would pro vide for his needs. As Elijah came to the gate of the city, a widow was gathering sticks. Elijah asked her to bring a little water for him to drink. As she was going, he asked her to bring a bit of bread also. She told him that she had only a handful of meal in a barrel and a little oil in a cruse. She was preparing a fire to cook this last bit of food for her son and herself; after that they expected to die of hunger. Elijah told her to bring him a cake first and then feed herself and her son. God promised that her meal barrel should never be Helps for the Children Elijah, God’s Messenger 1 Kings 16:30; 17:1, 8-16, 24 Memory Verse: “The Lord is nigh unto all them that call upon him” (Psa. 145:18).
