THE DREAM TEAM Why Jones Smiles Is the Best Practice I’ve Ever Worked At

When it comes to Jones Smiles, I’m one of the veterans. I’ve been working beside Dr. Jones long enough to predict his next move. My 29 years of experience in the dental field have served me well, and just last month

aspects. Not to pat myself on the back, but I have always had a keen eye for detail. I love carefully matching shades, shapes, and colors of teeth in an effort to maximize the potential of a patient’s smile. Whenever a medical professional is asked what they love about their job, they naturally reply, “I love to help people.” While that of course is true, I love to see a patient’s face light up when they see just how beautiful their smile can be. This is just one of the unique ways that I am able to help people with cosmetic dentistry. Aside from work, I spend most of my time outside playing women’s doubles in the Alta Tennis League. When I lived in the Pacific Northwest, I used to be an avid mountaineer, summiting Mount Rainier, Mount Baker, Mount Hood, and all the major peaks in the area. After I moved to Georgia, the mountains just weren’t quite the same, but I keep myself busy with the tennis league. After years and years, I have to say, I’ve gotten pretty adept at the sport, though as the years pass, my ability has, unfortunately, started to wane. I’ve been grateful for every minute I’ve spent at Jones Smiles. I’ve learned so much from Dr. Jones and the rest of the staff here. Honestly, I couldn’t imagine a better group of people. Best of all, they tolerate my sarcastic sense of humor, which can’t be said of everyone! – Laurie

I celebrated my 4th anniversary with the office. The team at Jones Smiles makes all the difference, and the days seem to fly by. We function as a family and even the most difficult of days seem to pull out the best in us. Our team is such a tight-knit group that Monday morning staff meetings sometimes turn into social time, catching up on the events of the weekend. We all enjoy sharing our life experiences and inevitably end up laughing. It’s a great way to start the work week and truly gives us the family connection. I remember one time my daughter Hannah came into the office as a patient. Later, at home, she told me, “That looks like the funnest place to work!” It’s true, and we hear it from our patients all the time.

Dentistry has always been something that I’ve been passionate about, especially when it comes to the aesthetic

SWEATIN’ IN THE SUNSHINE Creative Workouts You Can Do Outside This Summer

As the summer sun begins to beat down, your excuses to avoid working out go up in smoke. Here are some ways to mix it up and get yourself outdoors. Take advantage of hills. Today, instead of ramping up your treadmill, find a hill around your home. Ideally, you want the incline to be between a 6- and 8-percent grade. After a thorough warmup, do a series of all-out sprints up the length of the hill, recovering on your walk back down. Try the park bench press. Next time your daily jog leads you into the local park, find a sturdy park bench. The elevated nature of the bench makes it perfect for all sorts of body- weight exercises. The possibilities are endless. Try doing squats, double- and single-leg, using the bench as a support. Then, sit

on the bench with your hands on either side of your hips. Slide your rear off the bench, supporting yourself with your hands, and do 12 to 15 dips, bending your elbows up and down. To get your cardio in, do a series of step-ups to the bench, followed by box jumps. Then you can continue your jog as a cool-down. In the sun, all yoga becomes hot yoga. Yoga is already excellent for increasing flexibility and strength, but add the heat of the summer sun and it becomes even more effective. Set up your yoga mat anywhere the sun beats down and start your favorite yoga routine. Switch positions slightly faster than you would in a normal session — this will add a cardio-boosting element to your yoga practice and will increase blood flow, compounding the positive effects of every stretch.

WHAT OUR PATIENTS ARE SAYING

“After years of avoiding the dentist due to horrible experiences as a child, I made an appointment with Jones Smiles, and I am so happy I did. I have severe anxiety when it comes to dental visits, and they were so nice and explained everything they were going to do before they did it. The best experience I have had at the dentist by far!” – KRISTEN R. “I just want to start by saying that my experience at Jones Smiles was absolutely wonderful and will leave a long-lasting impression! All of the staff were welcoming and made me feel right at home! Being a former dental assistant, I tend to have the habit of analyzing every part of the dental work that I have done. I also understand the struggle of finding a dental team that truly cares about you and your dental health. I can truly say that this practice

cares about you and your experience as soon as you walk in the door. Dr. Copeland and her team met and even exceeded every expectation that I had. I will definitely be leaving my dental care in the hands of Dr. Copeland and her fabulous team from now on!

Thank you for a great experience!” – BRADFORD J.

“Truly the best dental practice I have encountered throughout the years. My teeth have seen a lot of work. I was given a plan to help preserve my oral health, but now I also have an improved appearance I had not known could be possible. The entire office is kind, friendly, and thoughtful. Customer service is a true priority. Dr. Jones has an A+ practice.” – MAGGIE M.

THE BUZZ ABOUT TOOTH VIBRATORS Get Out of Braces Faster With AcceleDent

The OrthoAccel Technologies’ AcceleDent System, which received FDA clearance in 2011, is a hands-free, rechargeable, removable mouthpiece that patients with braces wear for 20 minutes a day to dramatically speed up tooth movement. Patients often liken the soft vibrations to a gentle massage. “It is fast, safe, and gentle orthodontics,” Mike Lowe, CEO of OrthoAccel, said. “You get out of braces in half the time; we have consistently seen that.” The technology behind AcceleDent is a concept borrowed from the orthopedic world. Instead of using plaster casts on broken or fractured bones, a vibrating cup can be used to help reduce pain and speed up healing, which in turn results in a stronger heal in the bone. When considering the mechanics of movement, a simple mouth vibrator makes a certain kind of sense. In a randomized controlled clinical trial out of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, this vibration accelerated tooth movement by 106 percent during the initial alignment phase, and then 38 to 50 percent later, all without adverse events.

The most obvious benefit of AcceleDent is that it cuts braces-wearing time in half. For adults with braces, the decision to use AcceleDent is a no-brainer. The stigma of adult braces is still strong, and many adults would jump at the chance to reduce treatment time.

Braces usually require adjustments every few months, and AcceleDent reduces the pain that can sometimes make it difficult for patients to talk and eat. Unfortunately, the amount of time you use the AcceleDent doesn’t directly correlate to how soon you get your braces off. It’s been found to be most effective with the recommended 20 minutes per day treatment, but prolonged use can actually hinder its effectiveness. As of 2015, OrthoAccel has shipped nearly 40,000 units to 2,500 practices nationwide. The device tacks on $500 to a standard braces bill, but many patients say the cost is well worth the speedy results. ONE-PAN MEXICAN QUINOA SMILE-FRIENDLY RECIPES

DESTINATION: HAPPY PEOPLE Visit the Happiest Places in the World — It’s Contagious

Visit a hustling, bustling tourist trap and what do you get? Crowds of competitive travelers and a local populace that is sick to death of them. Visit a place with happy people, and you get good service, friendly faces, and you’ll learn firsthand what Harvard researchers affirmed in a 2012 study: Happiness is contagious. Luckily for the average traveler, the places that topped a nationwide Gallup poll and the United Nations’ annual World Happiness Report have plenty to offer in addition to cheerful locals. The Happiest States in the U.S. If we were to tell you that Hawaii is the happiest state in the country, you probably wouldn’t be surprised. And sure enough, Hawaii ranked first in overall happiness for the sixth consecutive year. The sunny beaches, rich culture, and perfect weather give tourists a taste of paradise that the natives enjoy all year long. Next in line is a state that has little in common with the Aloha State. Alaska came in second place for the third consecutive year. With

eight national parks, including Denali, Glacier Bay, and Gates of the Arctic, Alaska’s 663,000 square miles are filled to the brim with the wonders of nature. The Happiest Country in the World Denmark has long been the standard-bearer in this category, but this year it relinquished the title to its Scandinavian sister. Norway is home to some of the most breathtaking vistas on Earth, most notably its western fjords like the world-famous Geirangerfjord and Nærøfjord. For the city wanderer, you’ll find choice seaside restaurants and walkable streets in towns like Bergen, the country’s second-largest city, which sports rainbow architecture and a 15th- century waterfront. Knowing the heart of a destination begins and ends with its people. Tack on beautiful scenery and daydream-worthy activities, and you just found yourself the perfect vacation.
