Looking Back on an Excellent Partnership NEW DOORS, NEW POSSIBILITIES T here is something deeply satisfying about opening the doors of your practice for the first time. Any doctor who has been in that position knows all the hard work and sleepless nights that go into reaching that point. Likewise, those same doctors

UP UNTIL THAT POINT IN MY CAREER, I HADN’T MET ANOTHER DOCTOR WHO SHARED MY VISION FOR THE FUTURE. “

know all that work is nothing compared to what lies ahead. What’s interesting is how these experiences can leave you unprepared for what it’s like to open the doors of your second practice. My partner, Dr. Michael Graffeo, and I opened our Westchester office over four years ago. When I tell the story about howwe opened our own practice, people assume Michael and I must have worked together before. At the very least, we’ve been friends since dental school, right? The truth is, we met through a mutual friend, and first spoke over sushi. Prior to opening our Westchester office, I spent years working as an associate at another practice. I was even offered a partnership, but ultimately decided it wasn’t the path for me. In my head, I sawmyself opening my own practice in NewYork City. What could possibly be better than that? On my way out of my former practice, I met a guy who was coming in to interview. During our brief conversation, I told him about my plan to open my own practice. Imagine my surprise when, out of the blue, I get a call from this guy a short while later. He told me about a friend who wanted to start his own practice in Westchester, and he was looking for a partner. At this point, I had my blinders on and my sights set on opening a practice by myself in the Big Apple. There wasn’t anything that could change my mind, but I agreed to meet him as a courtesy. Michael and I sat down for sushi, and we ended up talking for over four hours. Up until that point in my career, I hadn’t met another doctor who shared my vision for the future. We both wanted to start a practice where we could cultivate relationships and collaborate with general dentists. We could change the way patients perceive oral surgery, with an upscale environment offering the highest possible standards and quality. What’s more, Dr. Graffeo is one of the nicest guys I’ve

ever met. He’s an excellent surgeon, very hardworking and ethical, and truly cares about his patients. After our first meeting, I knewwe was the kind of guy I could run a practice with. After we met, we arranged for our wives to meet over dinner, as well. As luck would have it, they hit if off just as well as we had. Right after dinner, we all agreed we should do this thing. Four years ago, when we opened our first practice, we experienced some growing pains. We had to learn how to build a team and communicate with each other. It was a challenge, but each day was interesting, and we had a great time figuring it all out. Today, there is a lot of excitement around our new office in Connecticut. Everything in the office is state of the art, which will enable us to facilitate the best patient care. It’s impossible to say what will happen next, but when you have the greatest partner possible on your team, every challenge will be well worth the effort.

Put On an Event to Bring in NEW LEADS

PEOPLE ARE SOCIAL ANIMALS. We like to gather together; it’s one of our most basic instincts. Want to play on that instinct to boost your business and attract new leads? Plan and throw a free event! Free events are “a great way to help attract new customers, cement relationships with existing customers, and build buzz about your business,” says small-business expert Rieva Lesonsky. A public gathering is a good way to get your foot in the door and generate some leads from the general public. It could be a free workshop or seminar, a meet-and- greet luncheon for local small-business owners, or even a birthday party for your company. We are very pleased to introduce you to our new oral and maxillofacial surgery practice.

Promoting your event is vital. You’ll want to invite your existing customers, and keep up a strong social media presence before, during, and after the event. One great way to advertise events is with a print newsletter, especially if you include a freestanding flyer for the event inside the newsletter. For more ideas on event promotion — as well as a great primer on event planning in general — check out Judy Allen’s book “Event Planning: The Ultimate Guide.” It goes into all the factors of event planning in way more detail than we can here! A free event is well worth the effort. Nothing builds the same goodwill in the community, generates leads from the public, and puts a dentoalveolar surgery and implantology. In line with our business philosophy, our facility is state of the art. We are paperless and fully digital. The office has a cone beam scanner, which we use on a regular basis to aid in diagnosis, patient communication, and treatment planning, and to fabricate 3-D surgical guides. These adjunctive tools streamline the process of patient care for us, the caregivers, and for the patients. W e are a full-scope oral and maxillofacial surgery practice, with a focus on

great face on your business like a free lunch or workshop. And for some business owners, such as attorneys, hosting a free event might be one of the fewways to promote your company without running afoul of marketing rules that apply to your specific profession. Are you ready to host your own free event yet? Plan, promote, and don’t forget to follow up. Strike when the iron is hottest, during and immediately after the event, for great leads and customer retention rates. Be sure to ask people where they heard of your business as well — something you should already be doing. That way you’ll know how successful your event was at attracting new leads! Additionally, it has ample free on-site parking. We participate with most PPO insurances and will work with patients on other plans. Our profession is ever-changing, with new procedures and techniques being developed at a rapid pace. It is our philosophy that we as practitioners must be diligent and current to be able to provide our patients with the best care possible. To aid in this pursuit, we are committed to providing education to the community. We hope you will join us for our lectures, CPR classes, and hands-on seminars. As board-certified surgeons, we pride ourselves on delivering exceptional patient care in a warm, inviting atmosphere. We are looking forward to meeting and working with you and your patients. The office is open Monday through Saturday, and we are always available in emergencies.

Our office is located at 1177 Summer Street in Stamford.

T oday, Swedish scientist and pioneering orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Per-Ingvar Branemark, is remembered as “the man who made people smile.” His groundbreaking research led to successful dental implants, which have helped restore the oral health of millions of people. When Dr. Branemark discovered the body doesn’t reject titanium like it does other materials, it went against conventional wisdom. To further investigate, Dr. Branemark led a team of physicians, dentists, biologists, and engineers. He sought to design a successful dental implant. Prior to Dr. Branemark’s research, any attempt to place dental implants led to failure. The body could not adapt to the foreign material and would ultimately reject it. Dr. Branemark’s first dental implant patient was Gösta Larsson, a Swedish man born with a deformed jaw. After receiving four titanium implants in 1965, Larsson could eat and speak normally for the first time in his life. The implants worked without a problem for the entirety of Larsson’s life, and Dr. Branemark’s work became heralded as one of the greatest breakthroughs in dentistry.

change a person’s life. Far from being purely a cosmetic improvement, an implant serves to stabilize the jaw and prevent further loss of bone and teeth. Once again, patients are able to speak, eat, and smile in a more natural manner. Successful implant placement is a team effort between an oral and maxillofacial surgeon and a restorative dentist. A skilled surgeon can perform the implant surgery and necessary bone grafting, but it falls on the dentist to create a permanent prosthesis that will match and compliment the patient’s smile. Dr. Graffeo and Dr. Linsky have years of experience with respect to implants, and they are happy to consult and collaborate on any number of cases. Every patient should have the opportunity to enjoy a smile that is whole and a jaw that is healthy. Tips for Your Trip Back in Time

The

When people think of a vacation to Greece, the first images that come to mind are often the picturesque beaches of Mykonos Island or plates of delicately layered moussaka. But no trip to the cradle of Western civilization would be complete without a visit to one of the most incredible historical sites in the world: the ancient Acropolis of Athens. Around 468 B.C., while Athens was enjoying its status as the greatest cultural hub of the era, Pericles initiated a robust reconstruction of the Acropolis. Almost half of the population was on the public payroll during the project, generating what would become many of the most memorable structures in history, including the famous Parthenon. Today, the ruins of the Acropolis still stand, a testament to the ingenuity of one of the most advanced civilizations of the classical age. If you plan on exploring the breathtaking ruins and the Acropolis Museum, which houses over 4,000 artifacts from the site, it’s a good idea to avoid the Mediterranean cruise hordes and get there early, as close to 8 a.m. as possible. A four-day pass to peruse the Parthenon, the temples of Athena and Zeus, and many other world-famous sites costs around 12 euros, but keep in mind you can visit each site only once per pass. Due to the scorching heat that hits the area in the summer, you may want to visit during late winter or early spring. To absorb the incredible history of this ancient monument, it’s a good idea to either pay for the audio guide as you enter or go to the “Watch, Read, Listen” section of ricksteves.com and download his audio guide for free. You can also get a full tour from a local guide. Head to toursbylocals.com/Athens-Tours to find the perfect guide for your trip.
