T oday, Swedish scientist and pioneering orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Per-Ingvar Branemark, is remembered as “the man who made people smile.” His groundbreaking research led to successful dental implants, which have helped restore the oral health of millions of people. When Dr. Branemark discovered the body doesn’t reject titanium like it does other materials, it went against conventional wisdom. To further investigate, Dr. Branemark led a team of physicians, dentists, biologists, and engineers. He sought to design a successful dental implant. Prior to Dr. Branemark’s research, any attempt to place dental implants led to failure. The body could not adapt to the foreign material and would ultimately reject it. Dr. Branemark’s first dental implant patient was Gösta Larsson, a Swedish man born with a deformed jaw. After receiving four titanium implants in 1965, Larsson could eat and speak normally for the first time in his life. The implants worked without a problem for the entirety of Larsson’s life, and Dr. Branemark’s work became heralded as one of the greatest breakthroughs in dentistry.

change a person’s life. Far from being purely a cosmetic improvement, an implant serves to stabilize the jaw and prevent further loss of bone and teeth. Once again, patients are able to speak, eat, and smile in a more natural manner. Successful implant placement is a team effort between an oral and maxillofacial surgeon and a restorative dentist. A skilled surgeon can perform the implant surgery and necessary bone grafting, but it falls on the dentist to create a permanent prosthesis that will match and compliment the patient’s smile. Dr. Graffeo and Dr. Linsky have years of experience with respect to implants, and they are happy to consult and collaborate on any number of cases. Every patient should have the opportunity to enjoy a smile that is whole and a jaw that is healthy.
