I’m a big supporter of education because it’s made such a positive impact on my family members in their youths and adult careers. My dad is a retired superintendent, my mom devoted most of her life to Hinton Public School and special education, and my wife works as a special education director and school psychologist. When I was in school, I had some excellent teachers who encouraged their students to achieve and others who weren’t so good. There will always be some teachers who have a greater impact on you than others. Those teachers can plant a minor nugget into your head and encourage you to develop it through further education. those weren’t my teachers. When I got into the upper grade levels, many of them opened my mind to the possibilities available to me. There were hardly any lawyers in my area when I was going to school, but my teachers planted the nugget in my mind that through higher education, I would see what else is out there and achieve my dreams. My football coaches also influenced me to develop a strong work ethic. Sometimes life can be very painful, but if you persevere, you can reach your goals. Everything I learned in school from my teachers and coaches helped me to pursue a professional degree. There are many people who enter college with one intention but end up dropping
their initial major and moving on because they don’t know what they’re looking for. My great teachers taught me that what I pursued would become significant once I started looking for a career. And now I see how their impact on me produced a trickle-down effect. Today I have an impact on people’s lives by helping them, because that is the profession my teachers’ influence led me to. It’s one of the reasons why I’m so excited about watching Addysen go to school. There are great teachers, staff, and administrators at her school. They all sincerely care about the students. Even though she’s just going into the third grade this year, I can already see the impact her education is having on her — she loves the whole experience. I’m excited to watch Addy take these steps, just as I did. Watching her reminds me of how important school has been for me and will be for her.

When you pop something spicy into your mouth, it’s always good to have a cool beverage nearby. You never know when you’re going to need to put out a fire. But when your mouth feels like it’s going up in flames, some methods of cooling are better than others. Let’s get this out of the way first: Water and soda are two of the worst ways to cool off your mouth after eating something spicy. Water, soda, and even fruit juice will simply spread the heat around, meaning that fiery sensation will only last longer. To combat the heat, it’s important to understand where that sensation comes from. Many spicy sauces and dishes get their heat from capsaicinoids, or specifically, capsaicin, This month, Compton Law wanted to feature one of our great attorneys. Other foods, such as mustard, radish, horseradish, and wasabi, get their heat from a compound called allyl isothiocyanate. This compound does not usually stick around as long as capsaicin.

And for those who are lactose intolerant or vegan, soy milk and peanut butter can help too. The higher the fat content, the better! What about those other foods, like mustard and wasabi? Unlike capsaicin, allyl isothiocyanate is partially water-soluble. This means water and soda will help cool you down — but you still can’t beat dairy. The next time you eat a habanero pepper or put too much hot sauce on your eggs, having a glass of half-and-half on standby can be a lifesaver. It may sound a little weird, but your mouth will thank you.
So, what can you do to beat the heat?
For heat brought on by chili peppers, you want a beverage that contains compounds capable of binding with the oiliness of capsaicin. The best compound? Fat. Whole milk will help, but here are some even better alternatives:

Keenan works mostly in family law. ELDER ABUSE IN OKLAHOMA

CRIMINAL LIABILITY AND FEDERAL RULES Oklahoma imposes criminal penalties on people who commit crimes against older adults. Local law enforcement is trained to investigate elder abuse. However, they are often not aware until a family member or lawyer reports the abuse.
Elder abuse is frighteningly common. According to the National Council on Aging (NCOA), about 1 in 10 Americans who are 60 or older have faced some form of elder abuse. This means that as many as 5 million people are abused by their care providers each year. Unfortunately, NCOA estimates that only about 1 in 14 cases are reported to authorities. WHAT IS ELDER ABUSE? Elder abuse encompasses a variety of actions. It includes physical, sexual, and emotional abuse and confinement or restraint. Most common examples of abuse include failure to provide basic necessities, such as food, clothing, and medicine. In other instances, elder abuse is characterized by willful deprivation. Caregivers who do this deny patients access to medical devices, medical care, or other necessary assistance. NURSING HOME ABUSE Nursing home abuse can result in severe criminal and financial consequences for the home and caregivers who abuse their elderly patients. Cases that create liability include falls, broken bones, bed sores, medication errors, and wrongful death. In many circumstances, these injuries and illnesses are caused by neglect from caretakers.
In 2017, the Trump administration changed the federal laws around arbitration agreements and waivers, which are used to stop people from filing lawsuits against nursing homes. These new federal
rules make it easier for nursing homes to evade legal responsibility for elder abuse. If you or your loved one signed paperwork before being admitted to a nursing home, your rights may be restricted. PALEO BALSAMIC PORK CHOPS
This flavorful take on pork chops is the perfect centerpiece for your meal. You can serve the chops alongside a simple salad, charred asparagus, or any other summer veggies you want.
INGREDIENTS

1 teaspoon fresh thyme
•
2 cloves garlic, minced
•
4 boneless pork chops
•
Salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste

1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes

1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
•
3 tablespoons raw honey

There’s a slight buzz in the air as you walk through the parking lot. Your ears embrace the sounds of cheering and conversation. Smells of recipes that took years to perfect fill your nostrils as you navigate through a sea of tents and pickup trucks. Friends and family wait at your destination with a cold beverage. The crowds of people all sport the colors of the home team as you finally arrive for what you’ve waited for all week: game day. Tailgating is a college football tradition unlike any other. Schools across the country will claim to have the best, but few can back it up. Here are five universities that can talk the talk and walk the walk. 1. UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN Go blue! The tailgate in Ann Arbor is truly something to behold. “The Big House” parking lot opens at 7 a.m., and from then on, it’s all party, all the time. With one of college football’s biggest stadiums, it’s only natural that the tailgate follows suit. 2. UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN Walleye, cheese curds, and brats are just the beginning at Camp Randall. Wisconsin has great tailgating at the stadium, but the local hot spots of the surrounding area are even better places to show your Badger pride. If you can’t get into
the arena to jump around in the fourth quarter, you can still join the tradition anywhere in Madison where there’s red and white. 3. LOUISIANA STATE UNIVERSITY Geaux Tigers! LSU’s tailgate is something to be revered across the country because of its food options. While the jambalaya and barbecue are utterly fantastic, Tiger fans whip up something else when the University of Florida comes to town: alligator. 4. UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON The Huskies have a different take on tailgating than almost any other university in the country. While most schools gather in parking lots, Washington fans are out in the water. That’s right — this “tailgate” is known for the boats that pull into Union Bay right outside the stadium. 5. UNIVERSITY OF MISSISSIPPI On game day, the Grove at Ole Miss transforms from a serene 10-acre park with mature trees to a scene unlike any other. Tens of thousands of fans gather in their red, white, and blue to prepare for the Walk of Champions, where the entire team strolls through the tailgate on their way to the stadium. It’s 35 years of tradition that contributes something special to the scene.
