JULY 2020 E-NEWSLETTER Army Navy Country Club
ARMY NAVY COUNTRY CLUB Established 1924
Secretary’s Message
The Army Navy Country Club Annual Meeting will be held on Monday, 5 October 2020 at the Arlington Clubhouse. At the meeting, we will elect Resident Members to the Board of Governors to serve for the period October 2020 to October 2023. Our By-Laws provide that only Resident Members may stand for election to the Board. At this year’s Annual Meeting, we are presently scheduled to elect 16 Governors. We will elect 5 Governors from those Resident Members who are on Active Duty or Selected Reserve Resident status. We will elect 11 Governors from those Resident Members who are in the All Others status. We will ensure that nomination forms are available in the Administration Office and on the Club’s website no later than Monday, 1 June 2020. To ensure the publication of the nomination in the Annual Meeting Packet, we must receive the nomination no later than Friday, 10 July 2020. We will permit nominations from the floor at the Annual Meeting, but please advise me of any such notifications prior to the meeting so I can ensure the floor nomination is of a qualified Resident Member. The use of military rank for nomination and election purposes is permissible under Title 10 of the US Code. For example, an Active Duty army officer may identify herself in the form of “CPT Jane Doe, USA,” and a retired army officer may identify herself as “CPT Jane Doe, USA (Ret.). Former military officers may not use their former rank as a preface, but may use their highest wartime rank as follows: Ms. Jane Doe (CPT, USA). I strongly encourage those who are interested in serving on the Board of Governors to familiarize themselves with our By-Laws, Club Rules, and Organization Manual. I am available to answer any questions you might have about this process at arthurwhite501@comcast.net or by phone: (571) 432-7261.

Can you strike the ball in the middle of the clubface? Do you hit off the heal, toe or you are not sure? Off-center hits result in loss of distance and directional control. Take an ordinary can of foot power, spray any clubface and see where you make contact. Adjustments in fundamentals can help with centeredness of contact. Take the contact challenge. If you need help in correcting your center of contact, contact one of your ANCC Golf Professionals! Click on the image to the right to watch the video! Where Do You Hit the Golf Ball on the Clubface?

Sand Play A bunker can be one of the most intimidating places on the golf course. Here are a few tips to help you just in case you find yourself in one. Set-up with an open stance and clubface. Shift your weight slightly forward with your hands either forward or even with the ball. The ball should be slight forward in your stance. Choking down on the club will help with controlling the shot. Use a steep arc setting the hands early, and swing across the target line. ‘Thump” the sand 1-2 inches behind the ball. Accelerate through the shot with the hands leading the clubhead through the ball. Click on the image above to watch the video!

Caddy Shack This article has nothing to do with the movie “Caddy Shack” starring Bill Murray and Rodney Dangerfield. However, as a former caddy, I can assure you that, like Bushwood and caddy yards everywhere, ANCC undoubtedly featured some real characters. For a good deal of the Club’s history ANCC had caddies. Given that caddies spend a good deal of time on Club grounds, primarily awaiting a “loop”, it was necessary to provide them with a facility to stay out of the elements (and out of sight), pass the time and be readily available to the summons of the caddy master, i.e. a “Caddy Shack”. Over the life of ANCC there were at least two Caddy Shacks at the Arlington course. To learn more, click here.
