Falcons !y over Ravens in football

GREGG CHAMBERLAIN gregg.chamberlain@eap.on.ca

«It was like a one-yard dive play,» said Falcons Head Coach Scott Stoqua. Adding that Ryall’s touchdown success in the second quarter of the game was due to a «$ea $icker» play during the previous down when he threw a pass to Falcons slot backMax Burke. «#at got us to the one-yard line,» Stoqua said. SFX quarterback Matt Burns and Burke tagteamed in the fourth quarter for the win- ning touchdown. «He (Burns ) threw a perfect (40-yard) pass to Burke,» said Stoqua, «who was able to outrun the defenders to the touchdown.» Stoqua also credited the tactical skills of Wayne Rector, the team’s defence coach, in helping bottle up the Ravens’ main strength in their o%ence. «#ey (Ravens) had a very good quar- terback and receiver,» Stoqua said. «#ey were connecting a lot, made a lot of (pass) completions.» Rector modi!ed the Falcons’ defence strategy to «double team» the Ravens recei- ver and keep him contained for the rest of the game.

!e Falcons of Hammond can take comfort knowing they drove their rivals, the Ravens from Russell, into the ground when the two high schools met on the football "eld this season. Going into the !nal weeks of the high school fall football season, the St. Francis Xavier Falcons are one and three for their win-loss record after a 31-14 defeat on home turf to St. Michael’s Catholic High School of Kemptville. #e Falcons had a roach game scheduled Oct. 20 in Brockville against St. Mary’s as they start closing up the play book. But the Falcons can look back with fond- ness at their 14-10 win over the St. #omas Aquinas Ravens in front of a home crowd on Oct. 13 with fullback Richard Ryall scoring the team’s opening touchdown with a short leap through a gap in the Ravens blockade at the goal line. #e SFX Falcons were clicking as they ran over, around and through the STA Ravens.

Grads split the weekend Win one and lose one was the situation for the Cumberland Grads in their latest junior A endeavours in the Central Canadian Hockey League. Cumberland took out Kemptville 5-3 during last Friday’s league session. Then Nepean edged Cumberland 2-1 on the Sunday before Election Night Monday. The Grads were scheduled to host the Hawkesbury Hawks Tuesday evening at the Navan Memorial Arena then hit the road Friday for Smith Falls, coming back home on Sunday afternoon to host the Gloucester Rangers. – Gregg Chamberlain
