HECLA GREENS CREEK CELEBRATES SAFETY MILESTONE

"It's the span of an entire career for some people. Kids have grown up. People have retired. New hires came in not knowing anything and are now the ones teaching. A lot changes in 10 years, and keeping that record intact through all of it — through crew turnover, process changes, new equipment — that's not luck." Ethan Currier, Metallurgical Trainer, 2017 "Ten years without a lost-time injury means a lot to me personally. It shows that our Mill Operations Department has built a high standard of training, expe- rience and awareness of the plant and the changing conditions we deal with every day. More importantly, it shows that our people truly care about one another. "From when I was a new employee to now training new guys myself, the message has always been the same: nothing in this mill is worth rushing, cutting corners or working unsafely. That is something our people genu- inely believe and put into practice every day. "Day-to-day safety in the mill means conducting area and equipment inspections, making sure people are properly trained for the tasks they perform and having leadmen and supervisors who are approachable when unexpected work comes up. It also means evaluating projects and jobs as a group, talking through the risks and determining the safest and best way to get the work done." Jerry Noy, Mill Safety Representative, 2018 "You don't protect the record, you protect the people, and the record takes care of itself. The moment the focus shifts to preserving a number instead of keeping people safe, you've already lost the thread. The foun- dation we have here, the open-door culture, the trust between the crew and supervision, the fact that nobody ever has to think twice about stopping production to address a safety issue, that's what year 11 looks like. Same as it always has. "More importantly, nobody here is ever put in a posi- tion where they feel like they have to choose between production and safety. If something isn't right we shut it down, we fix it, and we move on. That's not a policy we talk about, it's just what happens. When employees know that's genuinely how it works, they're not hes- itating or second guessing when they see a problem. They're just stopping and correcting it."
