Red Dog’s future has implications well beyond the mine site. The oper- ation supports hundreds of jobs and contributes to the economy of the Northwest Arctic Borough. Its land ownership and regional economic relationships also connect the project to Alaska Native communities.

“The Red Dog Mine Life Extension project is an important opportunity to extend the operating life of Red Dog Mine and the economic benefits it supports for the Northwest Arctic region and Alaska,” said Brock Gill, Teck’s senior vice president of operations for North America. Photo by Red Dog Mine

The existing mine is approaching the later stages of its operating life, with current operations expected to wind down around 2031 as accessible ore declines in quantity and grade. The proposed extension would shift production toward two nearby deposits, Aktigiruq and Anarraaq, located roughly 7 to 10 miles northwest of the exist- ing operation. Developing these resources could allow Teck to continue using Red Dog’s existing mill and related infrastructure rather than establishing an entirely separate processing operation. The current proposal envisions an initial 14 years of underground mining, providing a potential path to extend the operation’s productive life and the eco- nomic activity associated with it.

metric tons averaging 11.8% zinc.

Anarraaq, immediately to the south, contains an additional 17 million metric tons of inferred resource averaging 14% zinc. Both deposits also contain lead, silver and germanium. Further technical work, permitting and project devel- opment will determine how the deposits can be brought into production. The opportunity extends beyond zinc. Lead and silver have established industrial uses, while germani- um is important to several advanced technologies. The presence of all four metals on the U.S. critical

Significant Zinc Resources Nearby

The two deposits represent a substantial resource base for the proposed extension. According to resource figures from Teck’s February annual report, Aktigiruq contains an indicated resource of 42.2 million metric tons averaging 15.8% zinc, along with an inferred resource of 18.8 million

RED DOG MINE EXTENSION MOVES INTO PERMITTING SPOTLIGHT

silver and germanium, four metals identified on the U.S. critical minerals list. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will lead the federal permitting process. The designation pro- vides a framework for coordinated agency reviews and publicly trackable permitting schedules as the project advances. It does not constitute permit approval or guarantee that the project will be authorized. Extending an Established Mining Operation Red Dog has been a major contributor to Alaska’s mining industry for nearly four decades, produc- ing zinc and associated metals from the DeLong Mountains of the western Brooks Range. Located approximately 90 miles north of Kotzebue and 55 miles inland from the Chukchi Sea, the operation is a significant employer and economic contributor in Northwest Alaska.

BY FIREWEED STRATEGIES A proposed extension of the Red Dog Mine could keep one of Alaska’s most significant mineral pro- ducers operating for approximately 14 additional years, and a new federal permitting designation is intended to bring greater coordination and predict- ability to the process. The Federal Permitting Improvement Steering Council announced in September that the Red Dog Mine Life Extension Project had received coverage under FAST- 41, a federal program designed to improve transpar- ency and coordination in environmental reviews and permitting for qualifying major infrastructure projects. Sponsored by Teck American Inc. on land owned by NANA Regional Corp., the project would develop the Aktigiruq and Anarraaq zinc deposits through under- ground mining and deliver ore to Red Dog’s existing processing facilities. The deposits contain zinc, lead,
