Swimming at ANCC

In mid-1930, with golf and tennis fully in play at the Army Navy and Marine Corps Country Club, the Board of Governors took action to make good on a six year old pledge to build a swimming pool for the members. However, funding for the project was another issue. The estimated cost for a modest pool facility was $8,000, an amount the Planning Committee did not find realistic. After considerable deliberation, the Board approved an initiative allowing members to subscribe to the Pool Project; $10 for resident members and $3 for non-residents. By September 1930, the subscriptions had garnered sufficient funds to start construction, planning on a 1931 season opening. The pool opened on schedule and that first season was a total success, giving $1,000 back to the Club. The next few years saw increasing levels of use and financial success to the point that in 1934 funding for the Swimming Committee was incorporated into the Club’s formal budget. A new pool adjacent to the original was opened in June 1934 and the two pools provided enjoyable service through the war years and into the early 1950s.
