Foundations of the mind

Happy New Year! What comes to mind when you think about the new year? Maybe you think of eating black-eyed peas for good luck? Perhaps you were hoping to try a new hobby or do some self- improvement? Regardless of

1 . Take time to play and laugh! Laughter is contagious and it helps to bond us together. Additionally, laughter reduces stress and even improves physical pain. (a) 2 .Challenge and/or change your perspective. When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change. It’s a matter of perspective! The next time you make a mistake, look at it as an opportunity for personal growth rather than seeing it as failure. (B, C) 3 .Practice the art of gratitude. Take time to notice things you’re grateful for each day. Doing so increases the feel-good chemicals in your brain and reduces the negative feelings associated with depression and anxiety. (D) 4 .Pay attention to your attitude and make adjustments as needed. Charles Swindoll once said: “Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it.” (E, F) 5 .Stay connected to others. Loneliness is not only bad for your brain, but also your heart and your sleep! (G) 6 .Be of service to others. Believe it or not, when you help others, you are actually helping yourself too! (H) 7 . Get moving. It helps to lift depression and improves your ability to learn. (I)

your plans for the new year, it’s important to be your best self. In the last issue, we discussed the garbage of the mind, also known as the “junk” that fills your mind and steals the joy out of life. In this issue, you will learn more about laying the foundation for the things that matter. What is a foundation anyway? A foundation is a base for something. It can be thought of as a starting point or the basis for which something is grounded. In makeup, the foundation or base is what gets applied first. It helps to ensure that everything applied after the base builds or adds to the complexion. In homes, the foundation is the basis for the structure of the house. Without it, the house wouldn’t be able to withstand challenges and difficulties such as excessive wind and rain. At this point, you may be wondering what any of this has to do with the mind. While it may not have a lot to do with the brain itself, it has everything to do with your mental health. In order to have a healthy mind, you must have a solid foundation to build upon. A foundation capable of withstanding the challenges and difficulties of life. To start laying a firm foundation for your mind, consider integrating some or all of the following practices:
