you enter medical school, it takes approximately 3 to 4 years to complete; so that means it takes about 7 to 8 years, sometimes longer. After retiring, what do you want to do? I have not really thought about that yet, but I am sure that day will come. What does it take to be a successful doctor? You must have a servant heart. Being a good doctor, you practice the art of empathy first, medicine second. Do they do surgeries? Some do, yes. They are called surgeons. What is your favorite color? GREEN! My oldest daughter, Kristen lives in Belfast, Ireland and is a creative writing teacher. The color green is vibrant and reminds me of the beautiful countryside in Ireland. How much stress do you have? I am not stressed because I love what I do. How does it feel to save a life? Amazing! What is the hardest thing about being a doctor? It is being able to separate myself and let go of the fact that I am a Doctor.

Why did you become a country doctor to practice in Ashland City, Tennessee? As part of the National Health Service Corps, in exchange for my education, I agreed to practice in a country town in need of Doctors to provide quality health care for a period of time. I arrived here in 1986 and never left! How did you come to write a book? I have told many stories to friends of my experiences with patients and was encouraged to write them down. As a doctor, my time is very limited, but when the flood came in 2010, I was confined to the hospital in Ashland City; so, having this time on my hands, I started to put into a journal all of the stories I have told over the years. When this manuscript was presented to a publisher, they loved it and my first book was published! It is called, “Appointments with Heaven.” Since then, I have written another book. And the first one is now translated into several languages. What advice would you give to kids today? If you follow passion (what you like to do) and it becomes your profession (what you were created to do) then you will never “work” a day in your life.

Remember, Dr. Reggie Anderson was a kid just like you!
