The evangelist was discussing the theme of sinless perfection and asked all of his hearers who had attained that state of per fection to stand and tell the others about their experience. Only one man arose. Just as the congregation turned a questioning look upon him, from the rear of the room a woman’s voice broke out in a tone of wifely warning, “John, I’m here.” — S elected . 2 . A preacher had been speaking of the joy of full surrender and the possibilities of the holy life, drawing a beautiful pic ture of what home life would be if every body acted according to the Bible teaching. He closed his address by making an appeal for men and women to give themselves wholly to Christ. A woman in his audi ence turned to the woman by her side. “That is excellent preaching,” she said, smiling, “but I wonder whether such a life is possible.” The other woman smiled back at her. “Well, I know the preacher lives such a life,” she said. “I happen to be his wife.”— The Christian Herald and Signs of the Times. 3. and service for Christ (v. 17). Are you unhappy at home? Ask yourself which one of the elements mentioned by the apostle is undeveloped in your life. In the Christian home, Christ is the Head of the house. He is also the Saviour and Lord of each individual member (2 Cor. 5:17; 1 Pet. 1:23). Where these conditions obtain, no members of the home will find difficulty in obeying the rules that God has laid down to govern the common life. But perhaps yours is not a Christian home. You may be the only saved mem ber in if. If you will, by the grace of God, “adorn the doctrine” (Tit. 2:10), that is, display Christ winsomely to others, the tes timony of your life will be eloquent, and joy in your heart will abound. Helps for the Leader I. How much that dear girl enjdys her religion!” “Yes,” replied the boy, “Sadie may en joy her religion, but nobody else in the house does.”— Record of Christian Work. II. to Him and must be used in His service . . . God’s image has been stamped upon each of us to show that we were made, not to follow our own pleasure, but to serve Him.— The Intermediate Quarterly. MAY 9, 1937 WHAT MAKES HAPPINESS EN We hear a great deal about happiness these days, but the home is largely a for gotten institution. For the life in the home, the Word of God gives instructigns which, if followed, inevitably lead to happiness. The life of joy and victory must have its roots in life’s most intimate relations. Mentioned first in the list of persons in our passage (vs. 18-21) are wives, who are to submit themselves to their husbands, “as it is fit in the Lord.” To do this will not be galling if it be remembered that the hus band is to love the wife "as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it” (Eph. 5:25). Who would decline to sub mit to love like His? Fathers (and moth ers, too) are to strive to spare their chil dren discouragement; and the children in turn are to give obedience to their parents, “for this is well-pleasing unto the Lord.” Obeying these injunctions, what kind of happiness will result? It will be a full- orbed happiness, having in it the elements of kindness and humility (v. 12), forgive ness (v. 13), love (v. 14), peace and grati tude (v. 15), the word of Christ (v. 16), THE HOME?
