THE KING’S BUSINESS

answer by a second question, “ How then doth David call Him Lord?” (Matt. 22:43, 44). This silences them utterly. The Old Testament as well as the New teaches the Deity o f the Christ (see also Ps. 45:1, 6). Jesus’ quotation was from Psalms 110. He pronounces this psalm to be o f Davidic authorship and messianic in its applica tion. Many o f the Higher Critics deny this. I f these Critics are right then Jesus built an argument for His Deity either upon a mistake or upon a deliberate fraud. Any man who deserves the name o f Chris tian can easily decide between the Higher Critics and Christ. This same psalm is applied to Christ or ascribed to David in many other places in the New Testament (Acts 2 :34, 35; Rom. 15:25; Heb. 1 :3, 13; 10:12, 13; 12:2). David called Christ “ Lord” (cf. John 20:28; Phil. 3 :8 ; Acts 10:36; 1 Cor. 2 :8 ; Phil. 2:11). He is in the place o f power at God’s “right hand” (cf. Heb. 8 :1 ; Rom. 8:34). The time is coming when all His enemies shall be put underneath His feet. Jesus’ third ques tion, “ David, therefore, calleth Him Lord, how is,H e then His son?” was indeed a puzzler for the Pharisees. For us the answer is clear and simple, viz., Jesus is son o f David and Son o f God. The Phar isees were not converted but they were silenced. Saturday, February 26. Luke 21:1-4. Jesus was greatly interested in how men cast their gifts into the treasury o f the Lord; and just as He watched them in that day long gone by, so He is watching us today as we cast our gifts into the Lord's treasury. But o f all that brought, there was one who interested Him especially, she only a poor widow whom no one else noticed. Her gift was very small, two little coins, but it was by far the biggest gift brought that day; and the Lord said this poor widow cast in more than they all. He is say ing the same today o f many a poor widow and many a poor man whose gift is so small as to awaken contempt in the heart o f many a church treasurer, but so large as to awaken admiration in the heart o f

our Saviour. The largeness o f a .man’s gift is not measured by what he gives, but by what he has left. The woman gave “all that she had.” How many millionaires are there that give anything like that? Sunday, February 27. Luke 2i:y<). Some o f those around our Lord were greatly taken up with the magnificence and beauty o f the temple and the largeness o f the offerings that were made, but these things made no impression upon our Lord Himself, for He saw beyond the transient splendor to the days o f trial and judgment that were coming, and He told His disciples not to be taken up with these things for there should not be left one stone upon another that should not be thrown down. Is there not here a lesson for us today? Many o f us are quite carried away with admiration for the splendor o f our eccle siastical and other structures, but often times in these things there is no glory for our Lord, and sudden destruction may overtake them all any day. W’ c are living in a day in which we should all learn not to put our confidence in material things, not even in fine buildings which are supposed to be dedicated entirely to the glory of God. But on the other hand, when days o f judgment do come and when we. hear o f wars and tumults such as we are hear ing o f today, there is no reason why we be terrified,” “ for these things must needs come to pass.” These things are but the birth pangs o f a better age, they are among the things that are preparing for the com ing o f our Lord and the glories that shall follow, and the darker the days become the, more triumphant and jubilant the intel ligent student o f the W ord o f God should be (cf. v. 28). But the fact that there are wars and tumults o f most extraordinary character does not necessarily prove that the end is immediately.” There is a great tendency today to jump at the conclusion that because o f the great wars now in prog ress the end must come at once. Our Lord Himself has warned us in verse 9 against such a judgment (See R. V .).
