What Ages Us

Have you ever had the experience of watching someone famous on TV and thinking, Wow, they look tired ? Then, you realize it’s the signs of aging. I had this experience recently while watching a politician speak. His face was lined and sagging, and he looked, well, very sad. There’s one major reason why we look old: We lose volume. Our skin stays the same, but when fat is absorbed, our face shows it the most visibly. This was the case with the politician — he had lost so much volume that it made him look old and tired. Reclaiming Our Youth

Jane Iredale. It’s good quality; protects from the sun’s rays, including UVA, which causes wrinkles, and UVB, which causes cancer; and, once you know how to use it well, it has rejuvenating qualities. Men may be at a disadvantage when it comes to covering up. There are a large number of cover-ups and hats available for women, but not many options for men. However, they can use baseball caps or cowboy hats to protect their face, and everyone can wear longer sleeves to prevent further exposure. If you notice your skin reddening, go inside because your body is telling you it needs a break. All this isn’t to say that we should completely avoid the sun. Some sun is good and useful, as long as we don’t stay outside too long and take measures to protect exposed areas like our face, arms, and neck. There are good, bad, and ugly sides to sun exposure, like most aspects of life. Choose wisely, protect and care for yourself, and eat well, and you can maintain youthful skin for years to come.

“When applied by a professional, fillers are an effective way to recreate the volume that makes us look younger.”

The appearance of volume is dependent on good levels of hormones, like testosterone and estrogen, to give the skin vivacity and elasticity. It’s like a balloon full of air: It starts out taut and full, and when the balloon lose some air, it gets crinkly. This affects the face more than other parts of our body because the face is the area that’s most frequently exposed to sun and oxygen. It’s why sunscreen and covering up the skin can protect us against radiation and some of the harmful environmental factors that cause aging. This is the reason we use fillers. Fillers give skin its fullness and create a youthful appearance. When applied by a professional, fillers are an effective way to recreate the volume that makes people look younger.

You’re Getting Very Sleepy ...

Establishing a Bedtime Routine for the School Year Between vacations, bonfires, and sporting tournaments, your children’s sleep schedule probably went on break when they did this summer. With school fast approaching, it’s vital to get your kids back on a proper sleep schedule. In fact, according to the National Sleep Foundation, getting enough sleep can significantly improve a child’s growth and cognitive function. But getting a restful night’s sleep is easier said than done when kids have had almost complete freedom for three months. Try these tips to get your kids snoozing through August and prepared for school. Start Early and Go Slowly When practicing this tip, think of the old adage: “It takes 21 days to break a habit.” If your kids have been going to bed late this summer, set a time when they must go to bed, but don’t make it too far off the time they have been regularly hitting the hay. If they shuffle off to bed around 10 p.m., push their bedtime to 9:45 p.m., and then push it back to 9:30 p.m. one week later. Slowly work your way back to an appropriate time, and bedtime will be easier when school starts. Make It Easy Though the days may be getting shorter, it’s still relatively light out at night, making it nearly impossible for your kids to doze off when they should. Sleep experts recommend creating a sleeping space that mimics a cave: dark, cool, and quiet. This means sunlight shouldn’t sneak into the room, and the home should be a quiet zone after bedtime. No one wants to sleep while everyone else is having fun, so it’s important that everyone in the home is quiet at bedtime. Just Relax This is a rule your family should follow year-round, not just when you want to reestablish a routine. At a certain time each night, begin the nightly wind-down. For example, at 8 p.m. shut off your screens, put on pajamas, and engage in a relaxing activity, like reading a book or doing some yoga. Signaling to your body and your family that it’s time for bed will help your kiddos, and you, fall asleep at an appropriate time.

If you’ve noticed new, distressing wrinkles in the mirror, then you may be thinking about

and polymethyl-methacrylate microspheres correct wrinkles. Every face is unique, and different types of filler make it possible to tailor a rejuvenation program to your needs. Here at Beautique Medical Spa, we’re experts at using fillers delicately and precisely to help you achieve your ideal look. We offer four different services: Juvederm, Volbella, Voluma, and Kybella. All of them rely on hyaluronic acid except for Kybella, which uses synthetic deoxycholic acid as its active ingredient. However, each of the hyaluronic acid fillers have different molecular structures and/or particle sizes that give them unique properties. Juvederm is ideal for smoothing away wrinkles; Volbella adds volume to your lips; Voluma lifts your cheeks to give your face a youthful fullness; and Kybella can help you say goodbye to a double chin. Though fillers are often commended for their anti-aging effects, they can also be used preventively. In fact, we’ve been seeing more and more patients in their 30s and 40s request fillers in recent years to keep fresh wrinkles from appearing. that mysterious word whispered in cosmetic circles: filler. You’ve probably

heard that dermal filler is a magic substance that smooths your

wrinkles, plumps your lips, vanishes the bags beneath your eyes, and softens old scars. All of those things are true — but what exactly is it?

Dermal fillers are substances that can be injected under the surface of the skin. Depending on the type of filler, they can add volume, smoothness, and the dewy appearance of youth to your skin for years without surgery. Some of the substances used in dermal fillers include calcium hydroxylapatite, hyaluronic acid, polyalkylimide, polylactic acid, and polymethyl-methacrylate microspheres, and they each have their own special functions. Polylactic acid and calcium hydroxylapatite, for example, kickstart the creation of collagen, which is a protein essential for healthy skin. Hyaluronic acid adds plumpness,

Bringing Strength and Femininity to the Game

Marta Scores Top Goals, and Her Lipstick Looks Perfect While She Does It.

agree, because Twitter went into a frenzy both over Marta’s goal and her long-lasting lip wear.

In addition to being the all-time World Cup goal scorer, Marta is a starting forward for Orlando Pride, Orlando’s National Women’s Soccer League team. Her path to becoming a soccer icon hasn’t been easy. Despite the sport’s popularity in Brazil, from 1949 to 1971, girls and women were not allowed to play in any capacity. Marta rebelled against the prejudiced law and continued to play in protest, eventually earning herself a spot on a Brazilian national team. Now she continues to urge for equality, serving as a U.N. Goodwill ambassador and sending an empowering message to women and girls everywhere. While Brazil got knocked out of the World Cup a few games after their victory over Italy, Marta hasn’t stopped fighting to bring attention to women’s soccer and equal pay and treatment for all women. “People need to understand that women’s soccer is as attractive as men’s soccer to watch,” Marta says. She and her bold lipstick are proof that women can do anything — from scoring goals to empowering the world — and they’ll look damn good while they do it.

This summer, as Brazilian futbol star known simply as Marta sunk the game-winning goal into Italy’s net during the group stage, she became the all-time top scorer in the World Cup — men and women included. Marta looked joyful as the camera panned over her, her burgundy lipstick amazingly intact after over an hour of intense play under the French sun. Fans went wild for her victorious shot, and they wanted to know where she got her lovely lipstick.

“I always wear lipstick, not that color, but today I said, ‘I’m going to dare.’ I tried it, and I think it was good,” Marta said. Fans seemed to
