where shall I find my help? 2 My help is from God alone, Maker of heaven and earth.
3 God will not allow your foot to slip, for your Guardian does not slumber. 4 Know that the Guardian of Israel never slumbers and never sleeps. 5 God is your Guardian, God is your shade at your right hand. 6 The sun will not strike you by day nor the moon by night. 7 God will guard you from all evil, guarding your soul. 8 God will guard your going out and your coming in now and for evermore.

us look upwards – to the hills and beyond for help, to God who is the ‘maker of heaven and earth’, who protects us from dangers that come from the sun and moon above us. The imagery, in part, is military. While the left hand holds a shield and the right–hand a sword, the right side is vulnerable and dependent on one’s companion on that side for protection, your ‘right hand man’. It is God who protects our vulnerable side.
`kw Psalm 121 The heading of this Psalm is literally ‘a song of ascents’ and may refer to the pilgrimage ‘up to’Jerusalem, or the words to be sung on climbing the steps to the temple. The repeated phrases (five times the verb for ‘guarding’) and the way each verse builds on the one before suggest the physical act of rising upwards step by step. Throughout the Psalm the imagery makes
