The first letters of each verse together spell Yehudah, hence the attribution to Judah Halevi (twelfth–century Spain). The poet links the Shabbat commands given at Sinai with Israel’s entry into the covenant with God. Though the people stray, may God not do them harm, just as God had promised Noah never again to destroy the world.

Ooez¨A ©W moei The day of rest ... The ‘dove that found ease’is an allusion to the story of Noah’s flood. When the flood ended, Noah sent out a dove at seven–day intervals to scout for evidence that the waters had receded. When it could ‘not find a resting place’(Gen 8:9) it returned to the ark. But fourteen days later it did not return and the author associates the rest it found with the rest of Shabbat.
