proved many times that a class in definite Bible study does interest boys. Mr. MacArthur does, however, occasionally give his boys an outing; but the essential thing about his work is to teach the boys the Word of God and bring them to a personal knowledge of Jesus Christ as their Saviour. “Every week we see boys coming to Christ,” Mr. Mac- Arthur stated recently. “Lately a unique conversion took place—one of the most striking I have seen in several years. A young lad had been coming to the classes for some months, not missing one meeting. I had been giving the story of Bunyan’s ‘Pilgrim’s Progress,’ illustrating by lantern slides. This boy got a real John Bunyan con viction. He came under such deep conviction for sin that he could not sleep at night. At the end of two weeks of real concern he got down on the floor, crying out, ‘Where will I go?’ His pastor, who has a passion for souls, led him into the clear light. “Before his conversion, this boy had one besetting sin—when he was going to tell anything, he greatly exag gerated. His teacher asked him to speak in school, and as he warmed up to his subject, he began to make exagger ated statements. Suddenly realizing what he was doing, he stopped and said, ‘Get thee behind me, Satan.’ His teacher evidently was a Christian, for she seemed to understand. “Last week we had a prayer-meeting when twenty or twenty-five boys led in prayer. I said to the boys, ‘Have you been doing anything this week for the Lord?’ One boy got to his feet and taking hold of another lad of about fourteen years, pushed him up to the front say ing, ‘This is what I ’ve been doing, bringing this boy to the class !’ The young lad was embarrassed, and when the meeting was dismissed and the boys were going home, the first boy said, ‘Let us settle this thing now.’ We then opened up the Scriptures and the young lad went home rejoicing because the boy who was trying to be faithful had brought him to know Jesus Christ as his Saviour. This same boy never misses prayer-meeting and is actively seeking the salvation of the other boys.” — o — “Mighty to Save” M R. ERNEST STUCHBERY is rejoicing in the way the Lord is working in the Shop Department. Quot ing Matthew 25 :36, “7 was sick, and ye visited me; I was in prison, and ye came unto me,” he tells the story of a young man in one of the shops who had to go to jail to find Christ. He was raised in a home where they were taught the fear and admonition of the Lord, where they believed in children saying grace before meals. But he fell by the wayside. As many another young man has done, he began by getting into bad company, and eventually engaged in “bootlegging” “on the side.” One day he got into trouble with his foreman, and when the foreman was sitting at his desk in his office, the young man shot him three times. He was put in jail. His godly father was heart-broken, and so anxious for his son to accept Jesus Christ as his Saviour. Mr. Stuchbery talked with him about the Sav iour. He hesitated about making a decision, but after sev eral weeks of faithful dealing was led to acknowledge Christ as his Saviour. He has since gone to prison, and is bearing faithful testimony to his new experience. His letters are brimful of Christian joy and gratitude. Another instance of jail work is told by one of several young men students who visit the jail every Sunday to preach the Word and do personal work. They are praising
the Lord for splendid cooperation from the jail author ities: “I am sure that when Christ said, ‘Go ye,’ He meant to include the jails also, though He did not mention them specially. I am glad I have the opportunity to visit the jails. The men who have been incarcerated because of broken laws are held by the bonds of sin. “As I deal with those men, I find some of them to be youngsters from the East who have tried without success to find work and have been picked up and put in jail as vagrants. One young man whom 1 met had been out of jail only three days, when, because of his inability to secure employment, he was put back again. Those are the kind of men we must reach in jail. “Our efforts, have been blessed of God, and some of the men have accepted Christ, asking Him to deliver them from the power of sin. “Every Sunday we have opportunity to talk with someone. Hundreds of Spanish and English tracts and Gospels are given out, and we thank God for the promise that the Word shall not return void.” o— Blessing Through Correspondence Study "KÆR. ALAN S. PEARCE, of the Correspondence De- J-VJ. partment, gave the following recent report of the work of that department, asking prayer for the work that God is carrying on through the ten Bible Correspondence Courses. , “Only eternity will reveal the extent of the good ac complished through these courses,” said Mr. Pearce. “Quite frequently letters come tou s telling of blessings received through the courses of study. If we should divide the Correspondence students into three groups—all those Christians throughout the world who take the courses— they would comprise first, those in the homes ; second, those in foreign lands ; and third, those unfortunates who are confined in penal institutions. These groups are receiv ing benefit through the different courses. “I have before me three letters, each representing one of the groups : “First, from one in the home— “ ‘It is quite impossible to tell what this Correspondence Course has meant to me, for it indeed has helped me to become firmly fixed in the love of the Lord, and in the Words of His Book. The Course is satisfying, complete, progressive, and inspiring.’ “Second, from a foreigner— “ ‘My dear Teacher: Praise His name who kept me until this new year. He gave me splendid opportunities to study my correspondence lessons. I am much blessed by them, and the more I study the more they [lessons] be come precious for me. “ T am going to finish the course [Studies in the Gos pels] till now if you did not send me a new course, please send me “Teachers’ Training Course” because at present, both I am a preacher and a Sunday-school teacher. If you send some profitable literature for ■preacher and about Sunday school I will be very glad. “ T received in this new year the copies of T h e K in g ’ s B u s in e s s . Many thanks. Thanks for small packet cal endar also.’ “Third, from one in a penitentiary— “ T wish here to express my profound thanks to the Institute for its wonderful work in leading me to know more of the Lord Jesus Christ and to know Him and about Him, and to live for Him, through your Corres pondence School.’ ”
