This is such a cliché that the bands that have sustained suc- cess are actuallymuchmore rare than the ones that pop up, do well, and then fall away. The Rolling Stones have had forty years of success, but for every band like them, there are literally thousands of DexysMidnight Runners (Google that all you millennials, you’ll love it). It’s a cliché in sports for teams to use “No one believes in us!” as their battle cry because it happens so often. Without UnderdogHunger to push them, the privileged almost inev- itably lose their edge. They become soft and complacent. “NO, YOU CAN’T RACE AGAINST THEM.” When I was twenty years old, I bought a brand-newPolaris 650 triple cylinder snowmobile, one of the fastest produc- tion snowmobiles at the time. It was over $5,000. I financed it for a $197 per month payment and was super excited. I’m an adrenaline junkie, so I decided to race it. I wanted to modify it to make it even faster. The problem: I had no money to do that. I couldn’t hire anyone to rebuild the engine or add any cool aftermarket parts or anything like that at all.
