And because I wasn’t nationally ranked and didn’t have a team, I had to qualify to be in the final match. I had to race four or five times before I even got into the final. I won two or three races and one of the guy’s dads came up tome and said, “Hey, congratulations for getting this far, but you’ve only raced against the shitty people. Be prepared because you haven’t got to these guys yet,” and he pointed to the big sponsored team trucks. “They race last.” He said, “But I want to give you credit son, you came a long way for having an old machine and no crew, you’ve come a long way.”

And though I remember himbeing really nice and he prob- ably wasn’t beingmean, I remember thinking, “Fuck that.”

Here’s the thing. It didn’t make me mad. It made me inspired.

That sobered me up right away. I did everything in my power. I went and sanded down my clutch so it wasn’t so smooth, so the belt would stick stronger when I slammed on the gas. I cooled the machine, I got in the right mindset
