My timingwas perfect. I practiced that timing over and over. I used to have a handlebar inmy room, and I’d practicemy timing over and over. Heck, I’d practice it hundreds and hundreds of times. So I got to that final heat; I made it all the way to the champi- onship race where I was up against TeamArctic Cat, Team Ski-Doo, and all the rest of the badasses who made it that far. Just to be in that lineup was an amazing feat. I was the only non-team person who made it to the final, and I got up to the light, my heart beating throughmy fucking chest. I remember looking at all of them and not disliking them, just saying, “You don’t knowwho I am. I got this. You think I can’t. Look at me as if I have no chance, please underes- timate me, I can’t wait.” And that light turned green, and I got out of the gate first. Three of themwere right next tome, teamSki-Doo looked like they would pass me and it was likemy snowmobile had the same “it ain’t happening” desires I did. The snowmo- bile track caught a groove and my machine sped up, and I passed across the finish line inches in front of the number
