Have You Seen Our New Logo?
After a long, cold winter, March is a welcome sight. Spring is a season of change and new beginnings. I can think of no better time to dust off the cobwebs and announce that the practice is officially operating under a new name: Exceptional Smiles at Landerbrook. This change has been in the works for a while now, and some of my patients were well aware of it before we mailed out this month’s newsletter. When we announced the new name, I wasn’t surprised that our patients had a lot of questions. I was a little surprised at how many of those questions involved me.
other people at the office who make it an exceptional place. There’s Liz and Shelly at the front desk, and we also have Taylor, Janae, and Lauren, our hygienists. They are all great people who I know take great care of our patients. From the moment someone calls to make an appointment to the moment they say goodbye, it’s the team who ensures they have a wonderful experience. This isn’t a one-man show. Everyone inside works hard to make our office what it is today, and our name should reflect that. As for why we chose “Exceptional Smiles at Landerbrook,” that’s simple! We wanted a name that matched who we are as a practice. This office has always been about straightforward and quality service — guaranteed. I think our new name really captures that. I know there’s a lot of change going on. New name, new logo, and even some new renovations in the physical office space, but I promise the feel of the office will be the same. We’re still here, ready to take care of all your dental needs and make each visit exceptional.

familiarity. Nevertheless, the practice has been evolving for years, and it was high time we had a name that reflects who we are today. While I still own the practice, it isn’t just Jason A. Schermer, D.D.S. anymore and that is the biggest reason for the change. Dr. Andrea and Dr. Kalinsky are with us now, and I’m so glad to have them around. They aren’t my backup singers; we’re all senior doctors. Together, we have 80-plus years in combined experience. When a patient comes in, I want them to know they’re in good hands and will get the same quality care from Dr. Andrea or Dr. Kalinsky that they would get if it were still just me.
Are you retiring?
Are you moving?
Are you sick?
I am happy to report the answer to all of these questions is no. I still own the practice and plan to see patients for the next 20–25 years. The new name and logo have been a long time coming, though change has always been hard for me. We’ve had the same logo since 2004, I’ve been wearing the same style of khaki pants since I opened the practice, and I’ve been sporting the same haircut since high school! What can I say, I like

CELEBRATING ST. PATRICK’S DAY Family-Friendly Activities . ’ il - i l i i i
C elebrating St. Patrick’s Day doesn’t have to mean heading to the local Irish bar and drinking a large green beverage. If you’re not interested in going out this year and would prefer to do something at home with the family, here are a few ways everyone can celebrate. Irish-Themed Food What better way to get festive than by making some St. Patrick’s Day-themed dishes? You can make rainbow cupcakes, green cookies, St. Patrick’s Day popcorn, or — for a more traditional dish — Irish soda bread. You can also cook up an array of greens for dinner on March 17, which could include Brussels sprouts, spinach, cucumbers, green beans, peas, or asparagus. A Mischievous Leprechaun To treat your kids to a fun game, leave green footprints around the house and participate
in impish tricks! Empty a tissue box, hide the remote, swap out regular light bulbs with green ones, or draw rainbows on the windows. You’re only limited by your imagination. Exploring Irish Culture Another way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with your family is to sit down and read about Irish culture with your kids. Learn where the legend of the leprechaun came from or read other stories from Irish folklore. You can also watch videos of Irish dance performances and encourage the kids to make their own. There’s also fascinating history on St. Patrick and why he became the patron of the holiday that your family members can research together. If you have Irish roots, tell your kids about your heritage. Watch Irish Movies For a relaxing activity, settle down in front of the TV for a movie night filled with films related
to Irish culture. Try “The Magical Legend of the Leprechauns,” “Song of the Sea,” “The Luck of the Irish,” or “The Secret of Kells.” Make an Impact Teach your kids how to be “greener” this month by doing more for the environment. Discuss ways to save energy and water in the home, and talk about the importance of taking a break from electronics and enjoying the outdoors. This list is not exhaustive by any means, but it’s a good start to get your family to create new ways to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. You might even create family traditions that will last for years to come.

The St range Mag i c of Denta l Imp l ant s
Dental implants are one of the greatest discoveries of dentistry in the last century. In addition to offering a cosmetic solution that can greatly improve a patient’s self-esteem, dental implants are crucial to maintaining overall health and wellness. Thanks to implants, patients who have lost a tooth can eat, speak, and smile without struggling with a gap in their teeth. Implants also help stabilize the jawbone, preventing deterioration and further loss of teeth. For a long time, dental implants were seen as a complete impossibility. The human body does not adapt to foreign material. Early attempts at dental implants made of gold, alloy, or platinum always ended in the body rejecting the implant, which caused a great deal of pain and suffering for the patient. It wasn’t until a Swedish orthopedic surgeon named Dr. Per-Ingvar Branemark began researching bone healing and regeneration that the world of dentistry changed forever. In 1952, Dr. Branemark stumbled upon a remarkable discovery: He found a titanium cylinder fused together with the femur bone of a rabbit he’d been studying. Dr. Branemark discovered that titanium has the unique property to fuse painlessly with living bone, a process he called “osseointegration.” With a team of physicians, dentists, biologists, and engineers,
Dr. Branemark created the first successful dental implant.
The first patient to receive one of Dr. Branemark’s dental implants was Gösta Larsson, a Swedish man born with a deformed jaw. Larsson received four titanium implants in 1965. After the procedure, he could eat and speak normally for the first time, and the implants worked without a problem for the rest of Larsson’s life. Thanks to his groundbreaking research, countless patients around the world have had their smiles transformed. For this reason, Dr. Branemark is remembered as “the man who made people smile.” Dr. Branemark’s implants revolutionized the field of dentistry. Today we’re proud to be able to offer implants to our own patients. Dr. Andrea completed a 1-year fellowship in implants from the American Association in Implant Dentistry (AAID) at Rutgers University, making her well- suited to provide implants to patients in the office. While some severe cases may still require a referral to a specialist, we are confident Dr. Andrea will be able to help most patients in the familiar environment of our office. If a gap in your smile has been causing you trouble, give us a call at (440) 483-1003 to learn about the incredible benefits of dental implants.

founded in 1931. Today the Ninety-Nines have over 5,000 members all over the world, with a mission of education, networking, mentorship, scholarship opportunities, and the preservation of women’s history in aviation. The IWASM exists to house this history and share it with the public. When you explore the gallery, you’ll discover stories of daring heroics, ambition, intelligence, and hope. Learn about the brave WASPs (Women Airforce Service Pilots) who flew in World War II and get to know some of the stellar female astronauts who have left our planet’s surface and walked among the stars. In addition to the amazing exhibits, the IWASM also hosts numerous events throughout the year. Their next event is on March 29, Dinner with a Slice of History. Wally Funk, a member of Mercury 13 and the first female air safety investigator for the National Transportation Safety Board, will be sharing stories about her incredible life. The IWASM charges no admission and is open to the public every day. We are taking an office field trip there soon!
