The St range Mag i c of Denta l Imp l ant s

Dental implants are one of the greatest discoveries of dentistry in the last century. In addition to offering a cosmetic solution that can greatly improve a patient’s self-esteem, dental implants are crucial to maintaining overall health and wellness. Thanks to implants, patients who have lost a tooth can eat, speak, and smile without struggling with a gap in their teeth. Implants also help stabilize the jawbone, preventing deterioration and further loss of teeth. For a long time, dental implants were seen as a complete impossibility. The human body does not adapt to foreign material. Early attempts at dental implants made of gold, alloy, or platinum always ended in the body rejecting the implant, which caused a great deal of pain and suffering for the patient. It wasn’t until a Swedish orthopedic surgeon named Dr. Per-Ingvar Branemark began researching bone healing and regeneration that the world of dentistry changed forever. In 1952, Dr. Branemark stumbled upon a remarkable discovery: He found a titanium cylinder fused together with the femur bone of a rabbit he’d been studying. Dr. Branemark discovered that titanium has the unique property to fuse painlessly with living bone, a process he called “osseointegration.” With a team of physicians, dentists, biologists, and engineers,

Dr. Branemark created the first successful dental implant.

The first patient to receive one of Dr. Branemark’s dental implants was Gösta Larsson, a Swedish man born with a deformed jaw. Larsson received four titanium implants in 1965. After the procedure, he could eat and speak normally for the first time, and the implants worked without a problem for the rest of Larsson’s life. Thanks to his groundbreaking research, countless patients around the world have had their smiles transformed. For this reason, Dr. Branemark is remembered as “the man who made people smile.” Dr. Branemark’s implants revolutionized the field of dentistry. Today we’re proud to be able to offer implants to our own patients. Dr. Andrea completed a 1-year fellowship in implants from the American Association in Implant Dentistry (AAID) at Rutgers University, making her well- suited to provide implants to patients in the office. While some severe cases may still require a referral to a specialist, we are confident Dr. Andrea will be able to help most patients in the familiar environment of our office. If a gap in your smile has been causing you trouble, give us a call at (440) 483-1003 to learn about the incredible benefits of dental implants.
