Medieval Studies explores almost 1,000 years of society and culture through multiple disciplinary lenses. By studying the history and literature of this fascinating period, you'll discover the enduring relevance of the Middle Ages to the present day, while developing the skills needed for a graduate career.

Our Medieval Studies courses allow you to study the Middle Ages in a way that blends different methodological and critical approaches. Through history you'll examine topics such as the transition from ancient states and societies to medieval ones, the transformation of medieval Britain via invasion and Christianisation, and the Crusades. Study of medieval literature, including Beowulf and Chaucer, will enrich your understanding of medieval culture. You have the option of studying languages, such as Latin or Spanish. Specific pathways through the degree invite you to combine your study of the middle ages with complementary topics: ancient history, post-medieval history, or English literature.
