ABROAD as a paid language assistant INTEGRATED WORK PLACEMENT

Combining language modules with specialist modules, our Modern Languages programme will help you to learn languages (up to three) alongside the key theoretical and practical issues of your chosen specialist areas, complemented by work placement opportunities. Collectively, this programme will enhance your language competence, strengthen your intercultural awareness, and polish your overall communication skills, opening doors to a wide range of careers.

As a Modern Languages student, you can study a combination of French, Spanish and German. In addition, you can also select modules from our pathways in Cultural Studies, Teaching and Pedagogy, and Translation and Interpreting. You can study French and Spanish both post-A level and from beginner’s level. You can also choose to learn German from beginner’s level, either in combination with advanced French or Spanish, or by itself. There is a possibility for students wishing to expand their range of languages to study introductory modules in Catalan, Italian and Portuguese. All students have access to our Conference Interpreting Suite, dedicated language labs, and an extensive archive of foreign language films. Language cafés take place outside formal class time and bring you together with exchange students who are ready to talk to you in the languages you are studying. TYPICAL MODULES INCLUDE: Year 1 • Beginner and/or Advanced Language Modules • Concepts in Translation and Interpreting • Introduction to Culture and Linguistic Traditions • Cinema in a World Context

Year 2 • Computer-Assisted Translation • Dialogue Interpreting • Intermediate and/or Advanced Language Modules • Teaching Modern Foreign Languages to Young Learners Year 3 You will spend the third year abroad, working as a paid British Council language assistant or studying at a partner university. Some students also take paid work placements or work as volunteers on approved programmes. There are opportunities in Latin America for students of Spanish. Year 4 • Interpreting – Local Government Option • Language Policy and Planning • Modern Languages Dissertation
