Here Goes Nothin'
A round the age of 20, I used to think 30 meant "tired." Also, 30 meant I couldn’t have my nose ring anymore, and what would I wear?! I would need to dress differently, right? Should I start thinking about my mini van options? However, with thankfulness in July I joined the 30-somethings club — with the newly claimed idea that 30 is an honor. I have no worries about leaving my 20s behind. I loved them. I did a few things right, I screwed up most others. My 20s were chock-full of the biggest learning curve known to mankind. Not just in busi- ness, but mostly in life. Growth is important, thank God for the foundation of my 20s, to build a sturdy dependable 30s.

been there. When I was in college and took my first
My 20s consisted of exercising — dancing at the club or walking across UCM campus — and maybe a sip of H20 per day and sleep... sleep I got in the tanning bed. I’m not even going to mention the items I considered edible food. I sometimes thank my body, out loud, for putting up with my 20s. Now, 30 is not the new 20; 30 is a distinguished place setting, rubbing elbows with those that came before me in life’s learning curve. Thirty is smiling at having no plans on a Saturday night — true happiness, the REAL meaning of Netflix and chill. This summer, I turned 30 loudly, surrounded by people I love, something that filled me all the way up. I was determined to never quietly turn 30. Checkmate. While blowing out my candles, I vowed to myself that I was taking that bull of life by the horns, grabbing it and running, because I know what greatness can come out on the other side. I have big dreams for the Kansas City fashion community, and though they are fun, I have never been pushed and put to the test more than today. But, like diamonds, the pressure is always good. So, proudly I announce that we are growing our fashion and expanding to a brand new com- pany, Local Fashion Link. The next time you see my face, the logo on the cover may have changed a bit, but we’re still working towards the same goal — publishing fashion, sourcing local trends and garments from fashion savvy partners we trust, and supporting our fashion community with meaningful relationships. Oh, and just one more “little” add on: Local Runway — a new unique fashion show experience in Kansas City, showcasing only Kansas City based designers and bou- tiques. Local Runway will consist of two runway shows per year, and trunk shows throughout. I told you, that bull’s horns are mine. So here goes my determination to make this year, and those to come, all about Kansas City fashion and growth. We have some familiar faces coming along for the ride, as well as some new fresh and determined fashion lovers on our team. We hope you all are as excited as we are, and that you enjoy this issue, full of some of our favorite fashion yet, proudly curated from our city! We love our partnerships with so many great shops like Re-Runs and Boomerang, and we are fortunate to shoot at great vintage locations like The Aladdin Hotel and studios in the historic West Bottoms.

jewelry class, that is when my brain hung its hat on looking at architecture or nature and saying, “Ohh that would make a great necklace, or earrings or ring – or crown.” VKC: What's your design history? Nelson: I went to KU for graphic design but found myself in the Metalsmighing program instead, I participated in a study abroad program where we visited Italy, and amazing design studios while we were there, like Alessi. VKC: What inspires you? Nelson: Architecture, history, nature & patterns. VKC: How does your creative process work? Nelson: I start with a concept or idea, and then I research it. From there, I sketch out what I think I want the finished look to be like, then put my sketches into the computer using Adobe Illustrator. After that, the de- signs are placed on the metal where I hand cut them out, and follow the fabrication process of putting together pieces of jewelry. VKC: Why Kansas City? Nelson: I moved to Leavenworth with my family from Colorado Springs. I went to college at the university of Kansas, I have always had the intention of leaving Kansas City, but I really love this city – it’s home. ^ VKC: What mediums do you use? Nelson: Silver, Nu Gold & Copper.

I’ve always loved Kansas City, and enjoy using what we have to makeThe Fashion Issue great. I can’t wait to see what this city has to offer in the future! We teamed up with Pam Newton of Uncommon Relics because we knew only she could create the beautifully designed backgrounds we yearned for, mission accomplished. Thanks to iWerx, the exposed brick walls definitely gave us all the feels. Most times, we believe in “the more the merrier,” especially when it comes to collaborations, colors, prints and patterns. IT'S IN THE BAG W e’ve got to say, the '60s and '70s really were some of the best years of fashion—and they definitely got it right when it came to statement bags. We’re in love with the lines that the construction of this top has made. A top that creates interest in a trendy way is always a winner in our book.
