The program was initiated many years ago by Lafleur Funeral Homes of Embrun with the cooperation of the OPP, RCMP, Paramedics, Dan’s Towing and local fire departments, and eagerly adopted by area schools. The funeral home owners and staff wanted to do something to reduce the number of times they’d seen young corpses. Now most high schools in Prescott-Russell participate in this program or something similar shortly before their prom nights.
The event is arranged like a real accident scene, with students playing themselves. This year, Carly McKinnon-Humphries was the fatality; Brooke Sheldrick was the student with life-threatening injuries who had to be stabilized inside the car involved in the crash while the Russell Fire Depart- ment cut off the roof, Tyler Jodoin was the drunk driver who was arrested and char- ged with several crimes including causing death, and Nathan Bols, Jesse Lavictoire, Eric Goulding, Eric Ryan and Haley Terry played the grieving friends.

The mock accident is set up as realistically as possible to drive home the perils of drinking and driving, as well as distracted driving, which is now the top cause of road accidents.
