Autonomous combat drones
The greater the error, the faster the drone will move to correct it. Exactly how fast this is will depend on what the ‘proportional gain’ value is set to.
As a consequence of the proportional gain value, the drone may stop at a steady state before it reaches the intended position. The integral term is used to fix this, as it sums up the past error values, and adjusts the position based off on that. This will increase the power of the relevant propellers and move the drone closer to the intended position than just the proportional term, which may have ended up with a constant non-zero error. As an integral is constantly summing the error term, it may cause the drone to overshoot, causing it to sum negative terms and getting into a negative feedback loop, always getting closer but never truly hovering. This is where the derivative term comes in, which aims to predict future values, in contrast to the integral which summed past values. The derivative term computes the rate of change of error. If the drone is rapidly approaching the target, the rate of change of error term is very negative. This negative term is added to the control signal, and the motors decrease power, meaning the target is not overshot. All 3 terms have individual gain factors, which determine how much of an effect they have to the total movement of the system, and will be individual to each drone, which is one of the main reasons they require so much testing and prototyping. However, it has been proved as one of the most effective methods of controlling and autonomous or non-autonomous drone in flight. Conclusion UAVs are already revolutionizing the battlefield, and they are on the brink of changing day-to-day life, through deliveries, exploration, agriculture and far more. The rate of this success will depend on perfecting the variables discussed in this essay, and many more. In addition, this is the very start of the technological era: no doubt there will be a huge increase in the quality and design of these drones. What follows the foundations being laid down now will redefine not only military operations, but modern life itself.
