SHRUG THROUGH THE WINTER BY STOPPING SHOULDER PAIN Don’t Let the Weather Give You the Cold Shoulder

Whether you’re a pitcher for the Yankees or a custodian at an elementary school, few things can derail your daily routine like a shoulder injury. Lack of mobility, aches and pains, and decreased function can keep you from doing the things you love. Unfortunately, when the roads freeze over and black ice lurks in our driveways, there is no shortage of ways to end up in an aching bind during the wintertime. If an accident doesn’t get you, the cold weather and conditions themselves can exacerbate a pre-existing injury. You don’t really want to be singing the blues around the holidays. Luckily, an early intervention can keep you from being doomed to pilot the couch through the new year. While we often blame shoulder pain on factors like overuse, injury, or poor body mechanics, we know cold weather is a major contributing factor. Low temperatures are known to exacerbate underlying aches and pains, seemingly without any provocation. As such, winter is often the most painful season for people suffering from shoulder injuries.

It often boils down to blood flow. When your system is perpetually shocked by dramatic changes and freezing temperatures, your circulatory system can struggle to supply your body with an ample amount of blood. Poor circulation in turn causes rigid muscles and tendons, and that can cause severe pain as the whole human machine continues to stiffen. Since many of these issues stem from a previous injury to the tissue, it can take some time to get your pain back down to a manageable level. Start by ensuring that your surroundings are comfortably warm. It might be worthwhile to invest in a snowblower, a heated ice scraper, nonslip footwear, heating pads, and maybe a sturdier shovel. If all else fails — and it just may — you can always rely on your trusted friends at Cornerstone PT & Wellness Center for the best care around. With a smile and a light pat on the shoulder, we’ll see to it that you’re up and running, ready for the new year.

PEANUT BUTTER AND BERRY FRENCH TOAST

French toast is a staple for a weekend breakfast at home, but this version takes things to another level. Consider it a hybrid of French toast and PB&J. It’s just as delicious as it sounds.

INGREDIENTS

• 8 slices brioche, 1/2-inch thick • 1/4 cup creamy peanut butter • 2 large eggs • 1/8 cup heavy cream • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

• 2 cups cornflakes • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter • 2 cups mixed berries • Powdered sugar, to sprinkle • Maple syrup, for serving

DIRECTIONS

1. On a large baking sheet lined with wax paper, place 4 slices of brioche and spread 1 tablespoon of peanut butter on each. Cover with remaining slices, creating sandwiches. 2. In a pie plate, beat eggs with cream and vanilla. In another, coarsely crush the cornflakes. 3. Lightly soak sandwiches in the egg mixture, then dredge in cornflakes, pressing to adhere. Return to baking sheet. 4. In a large skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon butter. Once melted and up to temperature, add sandwiches, cooking on one side until golden and crisp, about 2–3 minutes. 5. Return sandwiches to baking sheet, add remaining butter, and repeat on other side. 6. Top sandwiches with berries, sprinkle with powdered sugar, and serve with maple syrup.
