Un agent de la Police provinciale de Hawkesbury a arrêté Mme Laurin le 2 juin, un peu après minuit, sur le chemin de la Baie à L’Orignal. Le véhicule a été saisi pour une période de sept jours et le permis de conduire a été suspendu pendant 90 jours. Mme Laurin a par la suite été libérée et doit comparaître en cour le 19 juin. Hawkesbury, pour sa part, travaille sur un plan d’action de recrutement. « Il faut déve- lopper des initiatives pour encourager les gens à participer. On va regarder ça bientôt, a-t-il déclaré. C’est plus demandant pour recruter, alors on va trouver des solutions. »
Il se dit satisfait avec les 28 pompiers volontaires présentement à Hawkesbury. « On est arrivé à notre objectif, on a tout le temps travaillé avec 28 pompiers, a précisé M. Gascon. Mais, selon mon plan, j’aimerais encore augmenter ce nombre. »
C’est difficile de recruter des pompiers volontaires, mais les services des incen- dies de la région se débrouillent quand même assez bien. « Je dirais que c’est plus difficile (de trouver des pompiers volontaires) parce que les gens sont plus occupés, a expliqué le chef pompier de Vankleek Hill, Michel Martin. « Pendant la journée, c’est bien plus difficile d’avoir du monde. Ce n’est pas toujours possible de s’absenter du travail pendant la journée pour un appel d’urgence. » Selon M. Martin, il y a présentement 22 pompiers à Vankleek Hill, mais il souhaite augmenter le nombre à 25. « On essaie d’en recruter d’autres, a-t-il dit. Ça roule bien à 25. » La caserne de L’Orignal compte actuelle- ment une vingtaine de pompiers sur appel. Mais elle est à la recherche de nouvelles recrues, idéalement cinq pompiers. La province de l’Ontario, l’an dernier, a éliminé l’obligation de la formation nor- malisée des pompiers volontaires, mais il y a encore de la formation requise par chaque municipalité. « Il y a beaucoup de cours à suivre, alors ça occupe beaucoup de temps, a indiqué M. Martin. Il n’y a pas de véritables façons d’encourager les gens à devenir pompiers volontaires. Ils doivent vouloir le faire. Les restrictions concernant la navigation sur la rivière des Outaouais ont été levées le 4 juin dernier. C’est le ministre des Transports du Canada, Marc Garneau, qui en a fait l’annonce. Lesdites restrictions avaient été mises en place afin de protéger les murs de sacs de sable des vagues que pouvaient causer les navires. Elles avaient déjà été levées pour la plupart de la région la semaine dernière. La région de Wendover jusqu’à Hawkesbury restait toutefois non-navigable. M. Garneau a toutefois tenu à rappeler aux navigateurs de ralentir près du rivage et de respecter les propriétaires qui pourraient encore avoir des sacs de sable en place. —archives

Le véhicule est pratiquement en fin de vie et le budget de 2019 prévoyait des fonds pour l’achat d’un nouveau véhicule de secours. Lemieux noted that his overall impression, as he goes door- knocking around the riding, is a growing skepticism about the federal government JOUIFXBLFPGUIF4/$-BWBMJODPOUSPWFSTZ «People feel that they have been misled and deceived by Justin Trudeau,» he said. «It is building cynicism and skepticism, and erodes confidence and trust.»
Pierre Lemieux doesn’t want voters to think his Tories are anything like the ones down in Queen’s Park. “We have nothing to do with Doug Ford,” said Lemieux, adding that the goal of the federal Conservative party is “responsible government spending” and recognizing that a balanced federal budget may not be possible within a four-year term. During a June 2 interview at a local coffee shop Lemieux continued to distance himself and the federal Conservatives from Premier Ford’s Progressive Conservative government. He dismissed any suggestion that some voters may wonder if an Andrew Scheer federal Conservative government would act the same way as the Ford PC provincial government, with a focus on cost-cutting at the expense of social programs. Lemieux wants to restore Glengarry- Prescott-Russell to the federal Conservative fold in October but he also has one other personal goal as he campaigns across the riding. «I want to restore people’s trust and confidence in their MPs,» he said. «I feel Canadians want to have confidence (in government) but it’s challenging. I want to serve the people, and do it in such a way to restore trust in our elected officials, in Parliament, and in our political system.» The official writ for the October election

His main criticism is that 92 per cent of the new tax revenue will come from Canadian citizens and small businesses, while many major corporations are exempt from paying. «I am going to be working very hard (if elected) to repeal the carbon tax,» he said. «An advantage I have is that people re- member me,» Lemieux said, regarding his campaign strengths. «They have a good and positive recollection of me as an MP”

Tous deux sont accusés de possession et de passage de fausse monnaie. Howick fait également face à des accusations de manquement aux conditions de probation et de non-respect d’une ordonnance d’engagement judiciaire. Improved traffic safety is the main rea- son for new sets of signal lights going up at two of the on-ramp locations to Highway 417 in Prescott-Russell. “To enhance traffic safety,” stated Brontë 8BMLFS.PPSFT 0OUBSJP5SBOTQPSUBUJPONFEJB liaison, in an email response to a query about the reason for new traffic light setups at the POBOEPGGSBNQJOUFSTFDUJPOTGPS)JHIXBZ 417, in Champlain and Russell townships. It has undergone one refit because the traffic light poles were set up in the wrong location the first time. School districts are not allowed under provincial regulations to have deficit bud- gets. The projected increase in student enrol- ment for the next term means an increase in the per-student provincial support fund- JOHGPSUIF$%4#&0 That will help deal with other changes to operation costs like new provincial demands for increased class sizes and re- duction or elimination of funding for some classroom teaching support positions.

Premier Doug Ford’s plan to allow gro- cery stores in Ontario to sell beer is getting a mixed reaction among store owners in Prescott-Russell. The Ford government recently introdu- ced legislation to break the current 10-year DPOUSBDUBMMPXJOH5IF#FFS4UPSFBMNPTU exclusive rights to beer sales in Ontario. For now all grocery store owners are waiting to see what happens with the legal battle between the two sides. Currently, a limited number of grocery stores in Ontario are allowed to sell beer, if their situation meets certain conditions. “We would have to reorganize,” said Daniel Asselin, owner/operator of Asselin Independent Grocer in Hawkesbury. “We’d need to make space for it and get extra DPPMFST#VU ZFT *ECFJOUFSFTUFEu Asselin noted that Québec grocery stores are allowed to stock and sell beer, and that is a big source of competition for his store and others along the Ontario side of the Ottawa River. “We’re right on the border,” he said, regarding Québec grocery beer sales. “They have it and that hurts us. TREE PLANTING HELP The South Nation Conservation Autho- rity (SNC) expressed support for a new federal four-year program, to help local and regional treeplanting projects in Ontario. The federal government will provide $15 million to aid Forest Ontario’s goal of planting 50 million trees by 2020, now that the Ontario government has cancelled funding for the project in this year’s budget. The SNC partners each spring with Forest Ontario to provide seedlings, at reduced cost, to local property owners for treeplanting projects. t will soon be time to once more be on the lookout for ticks. “It’s important to contact your healthcare provider if you believe a tick was attached for more than 24 hours or if you develop flu-like symptoms or an expanding rash in the weeks following a tick bite” stressed Dr. Paul Roumeliotis, Medical Officer of Health at the Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU). “If Lyme infection isn’t recognized and treated, symptoms can last from months to years, and include serious health problems affec- ting the heart, nervous system or joints.” The EOHU is offering free tick removal cards to local residents. The tick cards can make removing ticks that are attached to the skin easier, and can be carried in a wallet.

Along with distributing the tick removal cards, the EOHU is cautioning residents that popula- tions of blacklegged ticks, which can spread Lyme disease to humans, are growing in locations across the five eastern counties. The region has known risk areas, where blacklegged ticks have been identified and where individuals have the potential to come into contact with infected ticks. Lyme disease is a serious illness that can cause symptoms usually within 3 to 30 days after a tick bite. These include fever, headache, muscle aches and joint pains, stiff neck, decreased appetite, fatigue, swollen glands and a rash, although many people never suffer from the latter. The risk of Lyme disease transmission from a tick to a human is very low if the tick is attached for less than 24 hours. However, that risk climbs if an infected tick is attached for over 24 hours. Most cases of Lyme disease can be treated successfully with antibiotics. Ticks are most active in the spring and summer months but can be found at any time of the year when the temperature is above freezing, usually in woodlands, tall grasses and bushes. Residents can visit www.eohu.ca/lyme to learn how to protect themselves from ticks and Lyme disease. Tick removal cards are available for pickup, while quantities last, at each of the six regional offices of the EOHU. Le mode Eco : pour économiser de l’essence sans effort
NETTOYEZ-VOUS RÉGULIÈREMENT LES FILTRES D’HABITACLE DE VOTRE VOITURE?
En saison estivale, l’air climatisé de votre voiture est régulièrement sollicité, de sorte qu’il devient important de vérifier l’état de vos filtres d’habitacle pour vous assurer de respirer un air sain. Si votre véhicule est plus récent que l’an 2000, son habitacle est probablement équipé d’un ou de deux filtres à air. Leur rôle est de purifier l’air de votre voiture en retenant différentes particules fines, comme la poussière, le pollen ou la moisissure. Avec le temps, la saleté s’accumule et s’incruste dans le filtre, ce qui le rend moins apte à retenir les contaminants et peut diminuer l’efficacité du système de climatisation ou de chauffage. QUAND NETTOYER OU REMPLACER LES FILTRES? En général, les constructeurs automobiles recommandent de remplacer les filtres tous les 20 à 30 000 kilomètres ou une fois par an. Un nettoyage est toutefois idéal tous les quelques mois, particulièrement si vous roulez en ville ou sur des routes poussiéreuses. Des mauvaises odeurs persistantes ou un air climatisé bruyant sont des signes que les filtres doivent être nettoyés ou remplacés. Notez que contrairement aux filtres en tissu ou au charbon, ceux en papier ne
supportent pas les nettoyages; un remplacement est donc essentiel. COMMENT NETTOYER UN FILTRE? Servez-vous de votre manuel du propriétaire pour trouver l’emplacement de votre filtre (souvent situé derrière le coffre à gants) et la manière d’y accéder. Retirez-le ensuite avec précaution pour ne pas l’abîmer. Il vous est possible d’y passer l’aspirateur avec prudence, mais un nettoyage plus en profondeur est idéal. Positionnez le filtre sous un jet d’eau délicat, le côté le plus sale vers le bas pour que l’eau déloge le plus gros de la saleté. Immergez ensuite le filtre dans de l’eau savonneuse une dizaine de minutes, puis laissez-le sécher complètement sur une serviette avant de le remettre en place minutieusement. En terminant, sachez que les filtres ne peuvent pas être nettoyés indéfiniment. S’ilsdeviennent abîmés ou perdent de leur efficacité, il faut les remplacer par des nouveaux. Vous pouvez faire ce changement vous- même ou le confier à un mécanicien.
De plus en plus de voitures disposent aujo- urd’hui du mode Eco, lequel permet de réduire votre consommation de carburant. Souvent situé non loin de votre volant ou du panneau de contrôle central, le bouton qui active le mode Eco est reconnaissable par son appellation « Eco » ou « Econ », selon les modèles de véhicules. Mais que fait-il exactement? Cela varie d’un fabricant à l’autre. Essentiellement, lemode Eco consiste à réduire votre vitesse d’ac- célération en la maîtrisant. Cela se ressent en général par une résistance de la pédale d’accélération. Cette fonction est cependant désactivée lorsque vous vous déplacez à
grande vitesse, et ce, afin de rendre vos manœuvres de dépassement sécuritaires. Le mode Eco agit également sur d’autres fonctionnalités de votre voiture pour aug- menter votre économie d’essence. L’inten- sité de votre air climatisé peut être réduite et vos changements de vitesse contrôlés, par exemple. Si le véhicule est arrêté, lemo- teur peut également s’éteindre automa- tiquement. Pouvoir réduire votre consommation d’essence et vos émissions de gaz pollu- ants en appuyant simplement sur un bou- ton? C’est un non-sens de s’en passer!

COMMENT CHANGER UN PNEU CREVÉ EN 10 ÉTAPES FACILES Une crevaison peut survenir à tout mo- ment. Et s’il n’est pas plaisant de changer un pneu, sachez que cela n’a rien de com- pliqué. Voici 10 étapes faciles pour réus- sir cette opération. 1. Arrêtez-vous dans un endroit sécu- ritaire : dès que vous remarquez que vous avez une crevaison, réduisez votre vitesse et rangez-vous lente- ment sur le bord de la route, à un en- droit plat et suffisamment dégagé pour vous permettre de travailler. Ac- tionnez vos feux de détresse et votre frein à main et, le cas échéant, posi- tionnez tous les signaux vous permet- tant d’être encore plus visible (ex. : fusées éclairantes, triangles de sig- nalisation, etc.). 2. Stabilisez votre voiture : empêchez votre auto de rouler en bloquant la roue opposée à la crevaison et celle située en diagonale avec des cales de roues ou, si vous n’en avez pas, avec n’importe quel objet lourd et stable (ex. : grosse roche, morceau de bois, bloc de béton, brique, etc.). 3. Préparez votre matériel : rassemblez cric, manivelle pour le cric, clé adaptée et pneu de secours et gar- dez-les à portée de main. 4. Retirez l’enjoliveur : s’il empêche l’ac- cès aux écrous, enlevez-le à l’aide de l’extrémité plate de votre clé ou selon les instructions du manuel de votre voiture. 5. Desserrez légèrement les écrous : servez-vous de votre clé adaptée pour éliminer la résistance des écrous. 6. Placez le cric sous le véhicule : référez- vous au manuel de votre véhicule pour le positionner correctement à un endroit où la structure le permet. 7. Élevez le véhicule : fixez la manivelle sur le cric et tournez jusqu’à ce que la roue ne touche plus le sol. 8. Retirez le pneu crevé : terminez de desserrer les écrous, puis enlevez le pneu. 9. Placez le pneu de secours : installez la nouvelle roue dans son emplacement, puis remettez les écrous en place. Resserrez-les légèrement, sans forcer. 10.Abaissez le véhicule : tournez la manivelle lentement jusqu’à ce que le cric soit complètement abaissé. Resserrez les écrous correctement, puis repositionnez l’enjoliveur. Voilà, c’est terminé! Rangez votre équi- pement, puis reprenez votre route. Atten- tion : n’excédez pas la vitesse limite avec votre pneu de secours et, surtout, faites changer ou réparer votre pneu crevé dans les plus brefs délais!

GREGG CHAMBERLAIN gregg.chamberlain@eap.on.ca GROWING SUPPORT FOR VKH GARLIC FESTIVAL Ontario’s regional garlic festivals in Carp and Perth, and he was a strong supporter of the idea last year when someone suggested the club sponsor a garlic festival.
Garlic lovers gather in Vankleek Hill this summer to celebrate their favourite sea- soning, at the second annual Vankleek Hill Garlic Festival. “Basically, we’ll just have a great day with garlic,” said Stuart Wood, Vankleek Hill Lions Club president and garlic aficionado. The Lions Club is responsible for the latest addition to the local summer festival season schedule. Response to last year’s inaugural event was so good, that the club had very “strong” sense of obligation to cook up a second serving of the festival fun. Wood has been an organic garlic enthu- siast for the past 10 years, growing enough garlic bulbs for his own use and to give away to friends. He’s also attended a couple of
«People are really getting into knowing more about garlic, and also cooking with organic garlic,» he said. «Plus people just want to have really good quality garlic, and it gives people a chance to interact with growers.» Besides the garlic growers and their booths, this year’s festival at the Vankleek Hill Community Centre will feature Paul and .BSZ-PV1PTQJTJM jHBSMJDHVSVTPG&BTUFSO Ontario,» who will offer advice about garlic to festivalgoers, based on their 30-year experience in the garlic trade. «He does lots of research for disease resistance and quality in various species of garlic,» said Wood.

Ma région à mon image is a contest organized for students of Séminaire du Sacré-Cœur and Lachute’s polyvalente Lavigne. The goal is to have students take photos of the area. The photos were exposed for three weeks in April at the Lachute library and the Maison de la culture. Le Club Richelieu du Long-Sault a récemment remis un chèque de 1000 $ au comité de soccer de Grenville.
