15. Trained Faith '• “We live . . . as having nothing, and yet possessing all things” (2 Cor* 6:9, 10). Trained faith is a triumphant glad ness in having nothing but God—no rest, no foothold, nothing but Him self; a triumphant gladness in swing ing out into the abyss, rejoicing in every emergency that is going to prove Him true. “The Lord' alone”— that is trained faith. —Lilias S. Trotter. 16. Fray without Ceasing “Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit” (Eph. 6:18). \ ’Tis not to pray upon our knees, Then think a while to take our ease, As though to cease from piece of . work Where traces of its hardness lurk. Nay, father, praye? should be a breath, Which, to the soul, to cease means death. We, in the place of moments given, Should breathe prayer all the way to heaven. —William Olney. - Pleasing in His Sight “Thou art worthy, O Lord, to re ceive glory and honor and power” (Rev. 4:11). Are we not all too .apt to seek Him rather because Of our need than for His joy and pleasure? This should not be. We do not admire selfish children who think only of what they Can get from their parents, and are unmindful of the pleasure that they may give or the service that they may render. But are npt we in danger of forgetting that pleasing God means giving Him pleasure?—J. H. T. . 17, 18. Holy Sensitiveness “Jesus wept” (John 11:35). I am amazed how easily I become callous. I am ashamed how small and unsensitive is the surface I pre sent to the needs and sorrows of the world. We can never heal the need we do not feel. Tearless hearts ean never be heralds of the passion. We must pity if we would redeem. We must bleed if we would be ministers of the saving blood.—J. H. Jowett. 19. The Secret of Peace “My peace I give unto you” (John 14:27). To step out of self-life into Christ- life ; to lie perfectly still and -let Him lift you out; to realize that you are not a mighty messenger, full of care and responsibility, but just a little child with a Father’s bidding to ful fill; , . . to look up into His face and

catch His smile and smile back again;* to let your life be a mirror of His life—this is peace.—Selected. / ' 20. A Holy Passion “As much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel” (Rom. 1:15). When Alexander Duff, a white- haired veteran, was pleading for In dia in the General Assembly Hall in Edinburgh, he fainted in the middle of his address and was borne to the ' vestry unconscious. In a little while he recovered and begged to be taken back. “ You will die if you do,” he was told. “I’ll die,” he answered, “ if I don’t. I must go and ask the young men of Scotland if there is nobody left but me to go back and tell the millions of India of the love of Jesus.” ■ —China's Millions. 21 . Outward Holiness “Walk as children of light” (Eph. 5:8). By all means let us have inward experience, but by all means let us have outward “holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord." “We walk.” This is more than some can say. They can affirm: “We talk, \ye think, we feel” ; but true Chris tians can say, with the Apostle Paul, “Wte walk.” Oh, that we may be ever able to say it, too! , —Charles Haddon Spurgeon. 22. Inexhaustible Resources “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace” (Heb. 4:16). We arte put in contact by our High Priest with the inexhaustible resources of divine grace, . . . We could not have a better illustration of this than Paul, when the thorn in the flesh oppressed him so sorely. Should it be taken away? That was his de sire. Or would he give way under it?. That was Satan’s desire, but it was unthinkable. The Lord soothed his spirit with infinite sympathy and succored him with all-sufficient grace.—J. T. Mawson. 23. Ready to GiVit Account “There was a certain rich man, which had a steward; and the same was accused unto him that he had wasted his goods” (Lk. 16:1).
