Love of the Game Set Builder Auction - Winter, 2023

20. 1909-11 T206 Old Mill Frank Chance (HOF - Yellow Portrait) - PSA EX-MT 6 Frank Chance comes in a red or orange portrait variety in the venerable T206 set, seen in the latter color here, which celebrated the team’s 1908 World Series triumph over Ty Cobb’s Tigers with a uniform redesign that looked dramatically better than the prosaic “Cubs across chest” version. The card has a desirable Old Mill reverse and a faint wet sheet transfer of the brand logo can be seen in the background, seemingly running behind the portrait. Color and centering are very nice and the Old Mill reverse looks superb on this PSA depicting a popular Hall-of-Famer. MINIMUM BID: $600

21. 1909-11 T206 Frank Chance (HOF - Batting) - SGC EX 5

22. 1909-11 T206 Jack Chesbro (HOF) - PSA EX-MT 6

Attractive batting pose of Frank Chance for the T206 set, his one action card in the seminal pre-war series. The orange and green color scheme is a perfect backdrop for Chance’s looming at bat. The centering and edges are very nice on this attractive specimen. The reverse is a Piedmont 350-460 Factory 25 with some mild toning around the edges and light foxing present in a few spots. MINIMUM BID: $250

Jack Chesbro’s portrait card from T206 captures the Hall- of-Fame hurler at the tail end of his career and inadvertently celebrates the end of an era as he was traded to the Red Sox in the middle of the 1909 season and then retired. His 41 wins in 1904 remains the American League record. The green background is a study in fine shading and the facial coloring is sublime. The centering is sweet on this EX-MT example, featuring a Piedmont 150 Factory 25 reverse. MINIMUM BID: $400
