NICE TO MEET YOU :

SHOPPING Sport session

This year’s event has already set a record - for the number of partici- pants! In just a few years, it has become France’s second-largest marathon by runner numbers, behind Paris. Yet its charm, lies above all in its exceptional setting. Crossing seven municipalities, the route hugs the Mediterranean from Nice to the gates of Cannes’ congress centre. Azur Sport Organisation’s eight permanent staff are working flat out on countless technical details. They are backed up by 1,200 volunteers on race day. Preparations begin far earlier, as early as November 2025. “ We opened registration a week after last year’s mar- athon finished. So we’ve been working on this edition for over a year,” explains Pas- cal Thiriot. A dedicated steering committee Although the route changes little from one year to the next, roadworks can require a few adjustments. “ Every three months, we hold a steering group meet- ing with the technical, sports, tourism and communications departments of the local authorities along the route to review all issues relating to the route, logistics and safety issues ,” says the chairman. In 2025, the finish line was moved in front of the Palais des Festivals giving runners and spectators more space. This year, replacing paper cups with water foun- tains poses a major logistical challenge: supplying the thousands of litres of drinking water required at refreshment points.

Full coordination An event on this scale requires metic- ulous organisation. The association is therefore working with the SNCF to organise special trains, following a three-year forward-planning sched- ule. For accommodation, specifications drawn up with tourist offices identify establishments able to serve breakfast from 5 am on race day. “Many runners also arrive directly by train,” says Pascal Thiriot. At dawn, they make their way at a leisurely pace to Place Masséna, where instructions await them.
