Opinion: the only concrete Taggart Miller promise is a mega-dump

Comme la première phase du programme portait sur les activités de plein air, nous sommes fiers d’avoir participé à ce lance- ment en aidant à organiser des jeux en rap- port avec la forêt (identification d’arbres, etc.), et nous espérons que cela encouragera nos enfants à mener une vie plus active en We are writing to correct the impression that the proposed Taggart Miller Environ- mental Services’ project on Boundary Road, covered in the article in the 5May 2016 edi- tion of Le Reflet, is a recycling project. When the recycling TARGET for the in- dustrial, commercial and institutional waste is only 16 per cent, with at least 84 per cent going into a landfill, it’s simply a dump. As pointed out in Harry Baker’s presen- tation and comments when addressing the Township of Russell Council, the proposal is principally for a “residual waste disposal facility” with more than 10 MILLION cubic metres of industrial waste to be piled on the site, for future generations to deal with. To visualize it better, this is a solid block of industrial waste 1 kilometre long, 1 kilometre wide and 10 metres high. Taggart Miller’s demand is to dumpmore than 13 million tonnes of industrial waste in this pile. This is a mega-dump. TheMinistry of the Environment and Cli- mate Change’s review and Taggart Miller’s own documents indicate the true purpose of the facility and inform us: “The landfill component of the CRRRC will require between approximately 9.4 and 10.7million cubicmetres of airspace volume for a period of 30 years. The total landfill footprint is approximately 84 hectares and
will receive a maximum of 450,000 tonnes per year.” The precise percentage of recycling, or di- version, of the waste delivered to the facility is never mentioned in the Ministry review, only that it will vary “over time as technology or end markets develop.” The details of the Taggart Miller proposal state that the target is to eventually recycle only 16 per cent of the industrial, commer- cial and institutional waste. Taggart Miller has not satisfied our
concerns about other issues such as odours, toxic landfill fires, effects on numerous spe- cies of flora and fauna, traffic congestion, etc. We should all be deeply concerned about this dump proposal.
