Where can you go when your shipping needs don’t fit into the rigid boxes of the traditional shipping companies? The 64 nationwide Craters & Freighters locations provide custom packaging, pickup, delivery, insurance and shipping of just about anything for anyone. Some locations also provide HAZMAT-certified shipping services.

Founder and CEO Diane Gibson opened Craters & Freighters of Denver in 1990 as a pilot to test the market and the unique niche for such services. The business did well, and in September 1991, she opened the Craters & Freighters Franchise Co. and began franchising the business model. Craters & Freighters Franchise Co. provides continual national marketing campaigns, training, regional meetings and annual conventions, insurance mitigation, packag- ing engineering, and operation support for its franchisees. “We’ve built that reputation,”

said Becke Robinson, vice president of accounting and administration. “We have system standards — a certain way to pack- age the customer’s items, build crates and boxes, customer service, daily operations, as well as every aspect of their franchise.” Craters & Freighters Franchise Co. is in its second lease with MIE Properties and is looking to renew again. “We really appre- ciate MIE, the way they take care of the property, landscaping and security, and working with their management team is a pleasure,” Robinson stated.

Besides benefiting Craters & Freighters Franchise Co.’s staff, the business’s Golden, Colorado, business location also benefits franchise trainees. They can dine out and shop, spend time hiking and biking in the mountains, or visit Buffalo Bill’s gravesite during downtime. “There’s a lot to do when franchisees come out here,” Robinson said. “Being out here two weeks is a long time to be away from their home state, but it’s good for them because of the training and support they receive. Once they’re done with training for the day or week — going back to school, so to speak— it’s a great opportunity for them to do things at night and during the weekend.” Gibson saw a unique opportunity when she opened the first Craters & Freight- ers location. That concept of a one-stop location providing custom packaging, insurance and shipping is now entering its 25th year and going strong.
