first of many assertions that the basis of physical life is “ blood,” and the beginning of the great prophetic les son which pointed at last to the precious blood of God’s Redeemer. There is an interesting parallel be tween this restriction from eating blood and the' one restriction in the Garden of Edgn. There man might eat from every tree except one. Now man may eat any animal food except one. 4. "Whoso sheddeth man’s blood, by man shall his blood be shed” (v. 6 ). Here we have a tremendous and sig nificant change in the order of human society. Before the flood, when Cain killed his brother brutally and inex cusably, God set a mark on him in order to protect him from being slain. But nbw such as Cain, who kill others, are themselves to be killed. This marks a notable step, for it is the be ginning of what we call the institu tion of civil government. It is a very simple beginning. There is not yet any complex code of laws sucfl as we shall see later. But it is founded upon a profound and basic principle—the sanctity of human life. This is the basis of all human government: its only justification is the fostering and protection of human life. It is good or bad in proportion as it fulfills this basic purpose. Furthermore, we find laid Sown here {he penalty of capital punishment. Some argue that human life is too sacred to be taken thus. But they miss the point. The duty of the State ,to inflict the death penalty is based squarely on the sacredness of human life. It is just b e c a u s e human life is sacred that the man who destroys a life must himself for feit his own life. It is to be noted care fully that the death penalty is not to be inflicted by ah individual man, but "by man” in the collective sense; that is, by the government. This penalty has never been-abrogated, but is re affirmed in the New Testament (Rom. 13:1-5). A minister agoing to church one Lord’s Day morning, when the weath er was extremely cold and stormy, was overtaken by one of his neigh bors, who, shivering, said to him, “It’s very cold, Sir.” “Oh,” replied the minister, “God is as good as His Word still.” The other, not understanding, asked him what he meant. “Mein?” replied he. “Why He prom ised about three thousand years ago, and still makes His word good, that ‘while the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, . . . shall not cease’.” (Gen. 8:22).—Five Thousand Best Modern Illustrations, . by Hallock. ditional. God Himself undertook to meet all the terms of this covenant without aid from man, without con sulting man, and w i t h o u t being moved by man’s actions. The token of this covenant was the bow in the sky (vS. 12-16). For God, it was a perpetual covenant, never to be rescinded; it was wholly sufficient; it was continual, never to be forgotten by God, a constant reminder of what was involved. (We could scarcely use such ■>language as this unless God Himself had set forth these yery facts in giving this sign to Noah.) For man, the token was to be conspicuous. Every one could see the bow in the cloud, even though none could touch it. The rainbow was placed in the sky by God Himself because of the reality of sin and judgment. The scientist may teach us how the rainbow is formed by the action of the sun and the mist, but the Creator of both the sun and the mist is God. The rainbow should c o n t i n u a l l y remind man of God’s necessary judgment upon sin and His gracious p r o v i s i o n for all sinners. That provision is set forth in all the Bible. It is the precious blood of Christ, shed for the remission of sin. Have you availed yourself of its protection, by simple faith? Points and Problems 1. "And God blessed Noah" (Gen. 9:1). If we ask why God blessed Noah, the answer may be found in the pre ceding chapter, verse 20. The first act of Noah, upon leaving the *ark, was to erect “an altar unto the Lord.” The men of history who have been spe cially blessed of God are the men whose first thought has been for Him and His favor. When the new land is reached, or the new home is estab lished, their first act is to build an altar. Modern civilization is more con cerned with building roads, dams, skyscrapers, factories. Perhaps that is one reason that heaven’s blessing is so conspicuous for its absence. 2. "Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you" (v. 3). It has been thought by many students that here we have for the first time the eating of animal food, because in the original divine grant only vegetable food is mentioned (1:29). One of the main difficulties with this view is the fact that Abel was a “ keeper of sheep.” Of course, these animals may have been used exclusively for cloth ing and sacrifice, but that seems a bit doubtful. However, even though men may have eaten animal food before the flood, there is no question but that we have here the first divine authority for the eating of animal food. 3. “But flesh with the life thereof, which is the blood thereof, shall ye not eat" (Gen. 9:4). Here we have the
