T he U.S. Army built Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG) in northeast Maryland during World War I as a weapons testing center. More than a century later, APG is still an active site used by the Army and contractors to create the next generation of military technology. KLAS Manufacturing Solutions (KMS), a subsidiary of KLAS government, “develops, manufactures and fields leading-edge communication devices for the Department of Defense, as well as commercial partners,” according to Kunwar Harricharran, president and CEO of KMS.
The GATE at Aberdeen Proving Ground is the only business community located within the secure gates of APG, and it offers unique advantages for tenants. “We are able to have direct interface with the Army and work interactively with the decision-makers to understand, develop, test and field next generation, tactical edge solutions,” Harricharran said. “The Army is typically the ‘guinea pig’ for testing new technology, and once ‘Army approved,’ the product will reach all branches of government.” St. John Properties worked closely with KMS to make sure their facility met all of the safety and security requirements that are necessary for buildings on military bases, while also providing a friendly atmosphere for employees and guests alike.
“We have a very welcoming lobby with clear line of sight to see and control access to our very secured facility,” Harricharran said. “The facility is designed to withstand forces like terrorism and high winds and blasts, and the conference room features state-of-the-art video conferencing capabilities. We also have a cafeteria equipped to entertain employees and guests.” With strict building conditions that needed to be met, KMS was happy to find St. John Properties had experience with buildings on military bases, and St. John was able to meet a demanding time crunch in order to have KMS’ construction done on time. “St. John was involved with us from concept to full realization,” Harricharran said. “St. John started
