(CRNCC) that their community has much in common with his ownWest Coast riding as far as the employment profile is concerned. «In my riding the largest employer is a hospital,» Moore said. «The second largest is a Costco. After that there’s a sea of small businesses.» Moore noted that the small business sec- tor is an important part of any local economy and that the federal government needs to keep finding ways to help small business owners keep their operating costs down. He cited the student summer employment programas an advantage for many small and medium-sized businesses, and also non-pro- fit groups, whomay need extra seasonal staff but may be limited by their payroll budgets. He also noted that the program can help students gain needed work experience to further their own career goals. Mayor Guy Desjardins, one of the sche- duled guest speakers for the CRNCC annual general meeting, welcomed Moore’s pres- ence during his own speech and also remin- ded both, the minister andMP Lemieux, of the «pressing issue» for Clarence-Rockland concerning the County Road 17/Highway 174 link between Rockland and Ottawa/ Orléans and the need to widen the route to four-lane status for both economic and traffic safety reasons. During a later interview, Moore obser- ved that the 17/174 situation for Clarence- Rockland has parallels in his own riding. While hemade no promises about whether he could helpmove things along as industry minister, Moore noted that the link between Rockland and Ottawa is «a key highway ar- tery» worthy of support through the federal and provincial infrastructure programs. . «It was a good occasion to get a (federal) minister to listen to us,» Desjardins said later, adding that he was certain the drive fromOttawa to Rockland gaveMoore a good idea of both the condition of the route and the traffic situation.
